Got a first hand look at why America is so obese yesterday. I'm not trying to be on a high horse or anything because I've done this stuff myself, it's still eye opening when you recognize it.

Took the kids to visit Grandma yesterday. The nephews and family were there and joined us. Grandma isn't much for cooking so she just bought a whole bunch of frozen pizza bread rolls and baked those. I don't necessarily fault her for that because she's single now and not into doing much cooking. She made a salad to go along with it so it's not like there weren't any healthy choices at all. It did occur to me though that I can cook something that tastes 10 times better and is good for you with almost no additional effort.

I checked the label on the pizza box and noted that each pizza roll was 470 calories. Kinda high but they were good sized so I just went with a half. Combined with a good size salad, I ended up with a 350 calorie meal which was very reasonable.

I couldn't help noticing my nephew though. He's 11 years old and becoming quite chunky. He ate 2.5 pizza rolls, drank two juice boxes, and after a 300 calorie bag of muffin treats, ended up with what I calculated to be a 1600 calorie lunch. The sad part is that I think he and his family eat this way all the time. Fast food all the time and pre-packaged processed food more often than not.

It was just sad to see what they are doing to themselves. I don't think anything I could say would make any difference. We try to set a good example when they come over by us, but other than that it's up to them to make the right choices. At least I can say that when I see what they eat, it provides motivation for me to eat better. I think I'll go have a banana or something...

Oh, and it's 46 degrees warmer today than it was on Friday at this time. 40 degrees never felt so good! I think I'll go work out today.

Noticed the Y I go to is having an indoor triathlon on April 2. Quite a bit earlier than what I was planning on, but if I start now I think I can be ready in time. It's based on time rather than distance. 10 minute swim, 30 minute bike, and a 20 minute run. Doesn't sound like it should be too hard to get ready for. Heck, if I gain a couple lbs I can sign up for the Clydesdale category.

LOL!!! Go for it SV. That actually should be a very short swim (for me it would be, I'm slow) and an easy short ride, and a 2 mileish run. Not a problem. And I SOOOOOO know what you are talking about re the family and eating, etc. Having just been with extended family for a memorial service, I witnessed first hand a lot of eating too. I was just horrified by the foods that people eat. But the behaviors that they believe is going to "soothe those in pain" (sugar and fat). And like the one woman who is INSISTING that we take one of these processed frozen breakfast breads home with us. YOU MUST take one home with you. Uh, no thank you. NO!!! YOU MUST! Cookies, donuts, peanut butter filled pretzels. Ironically, the pretzels are crap that my grandmother ordered (as she was the WORST about having candy and junk and crap around her ALL of the time) before she died. And they showed up after she had passed away. There's good reason she was so heavy. And to listen to people at the service talk about how "you never went away from her house hungry and she always had so many wonderful nuts, and sweets, and treats, and goodies to eat". And how somehow that was a measure of her worth???? That is what made her a wonderful nurturing person? Then everyone stands there and mocks me for eating salad without dressing at the catered food buffet. Even my mother (who is as thin as I am now after her accident) was being cruel. She was refusing to eat. Playing to martyr due to some health reasons from the accident she has trouble with digestion when she eats. So she tends to avoid eating around people. So she was "not eating" that day. (rolling eyes). Yet, when I tried to encourage her to have something small, she just said she didn't want to get fat, (she's 5' 9" 130 lbs) and called me "Skelatore". She was being really mean. Then there was my dad....he was up to his usual tricks. While everyone else is "sharing" at the memorial, he's hitting the buffet before anyone else can get to it. So he can make sure he gets his fill of whatever he wants before anyone else does. His own personal eating contest. He ate so much that come dinner 6 hours later, he wasn't hungry. Honestly, it might be time to shop for a new family.

I guess I try not to read so much into others actions. My guess would be that 99% of this is just pure thoughtlessness rather than any actual cruel intentions. Your situation may be different though. Dropping a Skelatore on you in public is a bit over the top.
