Djburney's Journal, 16 October 2012

I stuck at 195 for a few days, then dropped down to 193, where I've been stuck for a few days, is there a pattern here? As long as I continue to go down, I guess I'll take it. At this rate though, it will be spring before I get my boots and sweater dress (reward for hitting 185).

Has anyone watched Weight of the Nation on HBO? I re-watched some of it last night, and it's frightening. I learned that 80% of the people with arthritis in weight-bearing joints are overweight. Hello! I was bringing on my own demise with all those extra pounds. Slowly killing myself, wow. I'm so glad that I have been able to turn it around. I would love to help young people who are struggling with weight turn it around before they have to go through what I went through with my knee, and worse. They featured identical twin men in their 60s, one overweight and sedentary, and one normal weight and active. Guess which one was having serious health issues and which one wasn't?

I wouldn't listen when I was young. I didn't have any health issues, not understanding what was quietly happening inside my body and I couldn't feel it and doctors didn't detect it. So did I think I was invincible? That those things were going to happen to other people, not me? Of course, now I have turned it around, but there is damage done that I can't go back and undo. I'm just glad that I have a much better chance of a healthy old age than I did a year ago.

I've become a book junkie with topics like that. I might have to check out HBO. If it's on at 3am when little man is awake and refuses to sleep I'm ok. Any other time of the day and someone will change the channel on me. And look at the bright side! I'm a drop/jump up/drop kinda girl. You have a less traumatic kinda weight loss. I think I'm going to get PTS from my scale.

So many people want to stay in denial about their eating habits and blame their health on genetics. I'm afraid that this problem will only continue to grow. I love those documentaries because they are so research based. You can't deny cold hard facts. I wish there was more WE could do as a community of people who have been unhealthy to convince others to jump on the band wagon.

I could have written half of what you just wrote. I was so healthy - I took it for granted. Not until I was 50 did something major go wrong with my heart - a virus - go figure. But if I had stayed in shape like I was until 43 that virus might not have stood a chance in my slim, athletic body. But no I had to gorge myself with food to feed whatever stupid hole was in my gut at the time. Now I'm 60. Arthritis, heart, no female organs...and 58 more pounds to lose. But I'm with you girlie, we will turn around what we can and become the best we can be. :)
