WendyMaq's Journal, 03 August 2018

I got to cross something off my bucketlist this week! I went to my very first Red Sox game at Fenway!! ...and they won in the 13th inning! I said no to all the offerings at the ballpark. (Would have had to mortgage my house to eat!) Saw Doc yesterday. I feel like I'm backsliding a little. My nails have are splitting again, I'm back to needing naps, and everything hurts. I'm also not losing weight like I was and that bothers me. After the cardiac incident, he cut my thyroid meds in half. I'm wondering if that is what is causing this. He is running blood tests to see where my levels are. Having these baselines for the inevitable menopause is good, too. He told me something very important, though. I need to be proud of the weight I've lost and the work I've done. At our age (50), our job is to be sure to NOT gain weight. Losing weight is extremely difficult at this point in time. I'm going to keep trying, of course, but the reality is that I may never see my goal weight. We also talked cardio vs fat-burning. He was pretty adamant that Cardio is the way to go always. Armed with that info, I hit PF and plugged in all my numbers for Cardio in the elliptical and did my usual workout. IT KEPT TELLING ME TO SLOW DOWN! It wants my heart rate at 139. I'm usually between 145 - 160. Can any of you tell me if that is an issue? My resting HR is typically around high 70s, low 80s. Blood pressure is fantastic.
193.4 lb Lost so far: 33.8 lb.    Still to go: 28.4 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

I’m 50 in September. I have had hypothyroidism for 20 years. My weight did not budge till I went as low carb as possible. I also lost far more body fat when I focused on strength training. At the very least I would do both strength and cardio. You absolutely can reach your goal. It might take more time than you would like but you can do it.

I read your comments with some amusement at your dr. comments. If you think at 50 it is hard to lose weight, wait till you have 25 + more years l like I have. Being 50 is being a youngum'. I can't do much exercise as I have a bad hip. But I think that his advise to slow down is good. Slow and steady wins the race. Good luck with achieving your goal!

The heart rate guidelines programmed in to the device are the result of averages measured on a lot of people; if you feel good at higher rate, I wouldn't worry. It would be more worrisome if you felt awful exercising at a lower heart rate. I personally think lower intensity exercise - walking - is much better during weight loss. High intensity load bearing exercise is better delayed until after the weight loss, to slowly transform remaining fat to muscle.

As to weight loss slowing: You probably spent a fair amount of time in the past at this weight, and your body remembers it. You will get past the plateau. Take measurements, you will probably still see reductions there, even if the scale doesn't move. Lastly: Try visualization - you wearing a new, slimming outfit; or seeing a particular measurement or weight on the scale. Visualization is very powerful, cognitive dissonance between current state and the vision can be a very strong motivator.

Thanks! I am really trying to focus on feeling good and being healthy and not putting so much import on the scale, but I've spent the better part of my 50 years with a strangely inaccurate vision of my body. Thank you GZ, That is what I really needed to know. I do feel good at the higher rate. It's just disconcerting when the machine starts flashing at me! LOL! "Danger, Will Robinson!" I already lost 30+ lbs. I thought the addition of cardio and low weight would kick it into high gear again. WAH!! Measuring would probably be helpful.

The book Younger Next Year has a fascinating twist on the WHY of exercise, kind of an eye-opener, I highly recommend it as part of your journey. Kill the carbs. Absolutely nothing refined. Goodbye bread, toast, pasta, all of it. You will definitely reach your goal wait, if you want to!

I also have hypothyroid and actually found low carb and weight training worked well. cardio burns calories but does not change body composition that much...build muscle and your metabolic rate will naturally change to maintain the muscle tissue.

I am in my mid 60's and when I am on my stationary bike starting to work up a sweat I am only at 105 to 115.(after the 30 minute mark) I think I would keel over at anything higher. I think you need to go by what your body is telling you. If you feel good at the 130 range then do that. I don't see the need to be super aggressive on any machine. but as always I would discuss this with my doctor. did have a cardio event.

what's the difference between cardio and fat-burning?

Woohoo HCB!! It was a pretty great week, wasn't it?! :D Thanks for the suggestion, BiketoLive. I'm a library assistant, so I will look that up when I get into work this afternoon. My diet is mostly sugar-free, and carb-free (refined), but I still try... then I pay for it. Feeling pretty sick right now after eating toast and eggs post work-out. I thought sourdough might be okay. (I'm still in denial... LOL) Hi Abbadabba! The theory is that if you work out for a longer period at a lower heart rate (60-70% of your max heart rate), you will burn off a higher percentage of fat than if you were working at cardio heart rate (which is 55-80% of your max heart rate). My doctor believes the most important muscle is the heart and as you progress in making that muscle stronger, the rest will follow. Max heart rate is roughly calculated as 220 minus your age and is the upper limit of what your cardiovascular system can handle during physical activity. You are right where you're supposed to be, Baskington. Good job!
