Muscle weights more than fat, so sometime you might be losing fat but gaining muscle. That is what is meant pay more attention to BMI or body fat %. I hope that answers your question.

a pound is a pound regardless whether it comes from fat or muscle ... the nice difference is that a pound of muscle takes up much less space than a pound of fat does.

its true, but it's unfortunately harder to measure

Ashley what I would do is take measurements of waste, thighs, arms etc..inches lost is better than just the scale .. we can get stuck on numbers (sadly) . Find a way to eat that is healthy and you can stick with in the long run. Exercise.. make it fun, find something you enjoy. Remember, one does not fit all. We are all different. You'll figure it out :)

Common to hear this. I find my body go a bit wild if I do not monitor the process closely. You see before/after photos of people who in both photos are at the same weight, but look completely different. Finding a way to measure fat % will probably be motivational, no matter what.

Couple thoughts. First, if what you are doing is working, don't fix it. Second, I measure BF% and weight. I don't know anyone who just measures bf%. Finally, all the talk on FS about weight loss stalls due to muscle growth is IMHO largely BS. Yes it is possible to drop fat and build muscle simultaneously, but muscle growth is very slow. If you are still fat, you're still fat. The mirror tells you that. Every other measurement, and I endorse them all, is about measuring and accelerating progress.

I disagree about a pound is a pound. Muscle burns fat and unless you are prone to easily gain muscle mass, exercising and lifting weights will assist your losing weight. However losing weight is pretty much just what you eat
