Addie Aline's Journal, 23 March 2016

I'm not surprised with the gain since I've had such a sore mouth I've eaten a lot of soft foods and carbs. I'm trying to get back on track so the weight should start going down.

I have a question for you all do you think it really matters what diet plan a person is on or is it really just calories in and calories out? I mean on Atkins I still try to watch my calories so if I was on a plan of my own which was mostly unprocessed, no grains I don't process grains well and non starchy veggies and fruit, some lean meat, some good fat and a little dairy and nuts if I kept my calories the same as I try to on Atkins would it be effective?

I've been thinking about doing a change but I really hate change. I guess I'm wanting more fruit with summer coming but I do have a problem when I eat cantaloupe and watermelon I can't get enough.

I guess that's all I have for today hope you all are doing great and remember Sunday is an important day we are blessed to have it.

(To me) I will loose this extra weight because I need to and I want to. I will do it ONE DAY AT A TIME!!!

Addie, if you like fruit, try to eat the whole fruit, it seems that apples are best for fiber, but the juice tends to boost insulin with the sugar. My diet says fruit in moderation, and you might check a list of low glycemic fruit. good luck with your diet. Think in terms of raw vegetables like green beans, I like veggies from the 99 Cent Store.

I don't believe in the diets that are out there - Ketosis, Atkins, etc because our bodies need a healthy amount of all food types. I really believe it's calories in, calories out for long term goals and maintenance. If you want to drop a few pounds fast then a fad diet is the way to go, I suppose but how does one maintain that? Meh...

Addie you can eat whole fruits such as berries and melons .. no juice. Mark's Daily Apple has a great analysis for calories in and calories out: http:/ /www. marksdailyapple. com / 7-common- calorie- myths- we- should- all -stop- believing/

@Mom, yes berries are ok on Atkins but I looked up cantaloupe and it's pretty high in carbs, even apples are pretty high in carbs.

@DJC70 - Keto diets and Atkins are not "fad" diets. Keto diets have been used for over 100 years to treat many conditions. Perhaps you might enjoy reading a book by Dr. Perlmutter titled "Grain Brain"

Addie, I agree with the others. Added fruits and berries are fine. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with any type of fruit or vegetable. The weight may not come off as quickly, but it will still drop. If you decide to try it, I say give it at least a month and see how it goes, you can always switch back. Everyone is different and what may work for others may not work for you and vice versa... Just don't give up!

I just looked at the glycemic load of both apple and cantaloupe. The apple falls into low GL and the cantaloupe falls into low GL. If you look at Glycemic Index the apple is low GI and the cantaloupe is moderate GI. The glycemic load takes into account both carbs and glycemic index and gives it a more accurate rating as far as how fast glucose goes into your system. Thumps up on either one you choose. Anything less than 13 is what to target for. At least this is what I am getting from the book. I am reading it over and over because my brain is thick at the best of times. I looked this data up on DietGrail . com

Thank you all for your input sometimes I read so much and it confuses me you know do I do this or do I do that. It's been going slow but that's ok I know why but I need my meds I think my problem right now has to do with all the dental work and a sore mouth an a friend ? telling me if what I was doing was right I should be thin now.

I love them both also, very good snack and mostly water.

I recently tried adding berries to my LCHF diet and while I didn't gain any weight, it really really really made me CRAVE more. It seems the cravings are still there after a year so I have dropped the fruit for awhile. It's still so difficult for me to limit higher carb foods so, FOR ME, it's better to stay away altogether....hopefully some day....

I think calories and daily exercise have been shown to have the best results.

That was a pretty cruddy thing of your friend (?) to say Addie. I think there are a lot of good eating plans out there right now. What you do depends on what you're comfortable with at a given point in time. Personally, I LOVE fruit and don't do restrictive plans well...so I'd probably go with eating the fruit and just know that the weight loss might slow down or even stall for a bit. Right now what seems most important is keeping good, satisfying nutrition in your system that is easy on your mouth and isn't contra-indicated by your meds.

Vickie said it perfectly.... You have to do what's best for you, especially right now. Something I try to keep in mind, and I know a lot of others on here do too, is that we didn't gain it all in one day, and we won't lose it in a day(although I wish we could 🙂) The important thing is that you're trying, and we're all here to support each other no matter what you eat!

Personally, I tend to change my fruits and vegetables with the season. It'll keep your diet from getting boring and you can save money that way rather than buying things that are off season. So long as you count your calories, adding fruits will not affect you negatively.

slamacow brought up a really great point. Almost all the fruit and veggies we buy are at the farmers market so it's seasonal and local(ish). It isn't necessarily less expensive where I am - but I've gotten some less than great fruit at the grocery store. I'm able to taste almost everything at the Farmers Market before I buy it and know that it's really really good. It's kind of become an "outing" for hubby and I...we take a nice walk thru the Farmers Market together and do a kinda/sorta meal plan for the week.

Yes I really miss having a garden this is the first place we've lived where we can't but it's so hot they just burn up I guess that's why I've gained this weight not enough good fresh things. Our farmers markets leave a got to be desired they should be called craft markets and home baked markets the few veggies look like they come from the grocery. I'll get it together I just need to get back on track and as my mouth gets well I will. I just have to be more careful until then. I should have thought ahead and made a lot of bone broth.

Addie, you are going through some pain and sensitive mouth issues. I wouldn't worry about a whole lot right now. If you want fruit, have fruit. Your friend telling you that you should be skinny right now needs a kick in the pants. I have been told similar things here in FatSecret. I have to struggle NOT to gain weight constantly. We all have different battles ... none of us are the same. Hope your mouth feels better. Hugs!

Thanks Mom I shouldn't have more than 2-3 weeks left with my mouth thank goodness that's what happens when you let things slide. The acid in most fruits would probably hurt anyway, I'll see I'm probably going to have strawberries on Sunday.

Be careful of fruits with those little seeds. Not sure what dental work you had done ... just saying.
