Our food production facility has had a class this week, working with the MD Dept. of Education trying out some new recipes to see if they're things that can be incorporated into the school lunch program. That means around lunchtime there's food available to sample, and man has it been good. Pretty healthy stuff and I've been sticking to small samples of either proteins or vegetable dishes/salads, leaving bread/starch/wraps alone. I hope they're going to make the recipes available as the stuff has been fantastic. Probably too ingredient/time intensive to be feasible for school lunch but we'll see how that all works out. Now just have to figure out how to log it into my food diary.

That sounds very interesting. It would be wonderful to see healthier lunch options in the schools.

They do a pretty good job with healthy meals in our county, and this past year a lot of the snacks were cut out of the program. They're always looking healthier options. Over the course of a week, if a student eats the provided lunch each day they've gotten 1/3 of USDA and MSDE recommended nutrition and calories for each day on average. It's a big challenge providing healthy meals that the kids will eat while also meeting food cost limitations, and each year funding becomes more difficult and requirements more strict. The Food Services Division is self supporting and not funded by taxpayers so other than the reimbursements available through National School Lunch Program we're funded by sale of foods in the schools. I'm glad I just have to deal with the technology side of it.

Good for your school district. I think it is a good thing for schools to get away from freezer to oven food making it from fresh is way better.

There was this one cook for a school cafeteria, she really loved to cook, spoil the kids, she gave her personal touch to everything and all the kids were very happy with the food. Then the school district forbid her to cook so good because every kid should eat the same food and in all the other schools it was crappy so it should be crappy food in her cafeteria too LOL

I had lunch with my daughter at the HS once here and the requirements they have to cook broccoli at and call it done caused the broccoli to become grey and smushy. Tell me that had any nutrition left in it worth while. Also how many kids are going to find an already disliked food to be liked in such a state. SMH glad your school district is trying to do better.

Hmmm, I never ever had a school dinner. In germany scool usually finished at lunch time (1 - 1.30pm) and I would go home where my mum had a warm meal ready for us. After my daughter complaint that the only edible meal at her school was chips and pizza, I started packing healthy lunches for her. Good to see that times are changing :)

All our elementary school food is prepared in a central production facility and delivered to the schools the day before serving in hot packs, heated in the school before serving. Is actually very good stuff, a little bland sometimes for my tastes but you can't go overboard on seasonings for kids plus sodium content is monitored. Secondary schools prepare their own foods, except for things like soups, sauces, gravies, chili, etc. which is prepared in our facility. Very state of the art school food service. We're in the top 20 largest school districts in the nation, I'm proud of what we do. I've worked there for 32 years and couldn't ask for better people to work for.
