Hello everyone:) On my diet I am trying to balance carbs, fat, and protein and stay under 900 calories per day. Everything seems to be working except I can't seem to get enough protein and still stay under 900. For breakfast I had apples and a piece of low carb bread w/ peanut butter. That gave me plenty of fat and carbs, but not much protein. I tried drinking a muscle milk today which has 25 g of protein and not much fat or carbs, but it has 230 cals. Does anyone know of anything really high in protein, but low in cals? I didn't really wanna replace a meal with a muscle milk cuz I feel really hungry. I don't eat red meat and I'm allergic to fish. That leaves me chicken and it has some protein, but not enough. Any advice would be helpful.

Try nuts and some cheeses. This will also reduce your hunger. Dr. G

Hi. In my opinion 900 kcals are too low for you. And for anyone else. It is recommended for women not to eat under 1200 calories a day, because otherwise you will slow your metabolism down and lose weight slower.

Thank you. I am gonna go to the store and pick up some MLO. I will also try and incorporate some cheese into my diet. :)

I prefer eggs for cheap breakfast protein. Peanut butter is going to be very calorie dense, so you may want to look for foods with more bulk relative to their calorie content when you are trying to eat a low calorie diet.

Talk to your doctor! At your weight 900 calories is a bit low. Chicken is bar none the best bang for buck with calories/protein. If you can't get enough protein from chicken you need to up your calories. Without enough protein your body will just break down your muscle, which will slow down your progress anyways. Do 1200 calories at the very least. I don't know your height or exercise level, but you could probably eat 1500 calories and still lose weight at a decent pace.

Beans are a good source of protein and low in fat. Kinda high in carbs, though.

900 is way too low!

I think the misconception with a lot of people is that low calories equals losing weight......it doesn't. In fact, it's just the opposite. You should be trying to eat more at a SLOW rate (over the course of 6 months) to build up your metabolism.....the more efficient your body becomes at absorbing food, the more your metabolism will speed up thus increasing your weight loss while eating more.

http://iifym.com/tdee-calculator/ if you use this calculator you should be able to find out how much to eat to maintain your weight, if you create a deficit through diet and exercise you will lose weight steadily and healthily

I agree with Diana and Bubba. 900 is way too low. Need to bump that up to at least 1200. For breakfast, try 2 eggs instead of apples. You can scramble or bake them into mini quiches the night before and then can just warm them up in the microwave the next morning for a quick breakfast that's low fat, high protein. I like to saute some spinach and tomatoes to top them for a little extra flavor. Try 30% of calories from protein, 30% from carbs and 40% from healthy fats.

I agree with Railroad76 and others that 900 is too low, unsustainable, unhealthy and counterproductive. 1200-1500 with exercise is a healthier target . . . slow and steady wins the 'fat' race!

also eggs are great protein for lower cal! i like to mix up a carton at once, add chopped veggies and a bit of cheese and bake it in the oven, i eat it for breakfast most mornings and it's filling and healthy for not a lot of calories. but i still say you need more than 900, you'll get burned out from your body not having enough energy.

Thank you for all your advice. I know 900 cals seems low, but I have a very sedentary lifestyle right now. I definitely plan on eating more when I am more active. I decided on beans and this yvez veggie burger that I found. That balanced me almost perfect. I know I will be utilizing most of your advice. Have a good night everyone. Again, Thank you.

Muscle Milk has a Lite formula (Muscle Milk is actually higher calorie than many whey protein powders, you could try getting a bulk protein powder that doesn't have added fat). Other good sources of protein that are low calorie: Greek yogurt and cottage cheese.

Low calories = losing weight 100 percent of the time (barring any medical condition). And if you are especially over weight, say 40 lbs or more, a large caloric defecit will cause your body to start burning your fat for energy. The only risk is going too low and slowing down your metabolism which will slow your weight loss, but will NOT stop it. If you are feeling good at 900, that's good. But as others have said, it is a bit low.

I'm on a 800 ish calorie diet, low carbs, low fat, and I eat the new Special K protein for breakfast, it has 19 g. of protein, with two boiled eggs or scrambled. I try to eat most of my high protein foods in the morning to get me going at work, my lunch is lite and so is my dinner. I try not to stress over it so much, makes me want to eat more. So far I have lost a pound in a week, but I cheated and ate what I wanted pretty much over the weekend :( I'm trying! I feel better, I have lost a total of 12 lbs. so far since May 25. I tried the 500 calorie diet and got sick and all my co-workers were afraid for me, I was really looking bad. Just wasn't enough calories for the job I do. So here's to the 800 calorie or so. Like I said I'm not going to stress over it, I'm eating better, making better choices and I'm proud of myself!

Good job 50Becky! I think that each individual needs to set their own caloric intake depending on what makes them feel good. I'm gonna take your advice and not stress so much over it. Thank you to everyone else for their advice and input.
