Hermiones Mom's Journal, 27 August 2014

So I managed to get through a weekend of houseguests without getting into too much trouble. Of course I'm discovering it's much harder to get into trouble with food when you can't eat any dairy, any high fat or high sugar food, no nuts, seeds, or beans... It's not like when you're dieting for weight loss, because you know if you screw up and eat these things, you'll feel really really sick. Meanwhile, for days I've been building up a huge craving for ice cream. I always have a allowed myself ice cream once a week when I diet -- usually Friday night. For a while I was staving off ice cream cravings by making smoothies with frozen, uncooked fruit. But now, I can't have anything uncooked AND I can't have real ice cream. So I was starting to feel really deprived, and I know that's always dangerous for a diet. Today I remembered that the gelato store near me makes a 'milk shake' with no dairy -- it's made with sorbet and sparkling water in the blender. So that's what I had today, and it was delicious and satisfying: dark chocolate and orange-ginger sorbet blended together with plain sparkling water. So I'm really satisfied now, and I've stopped thinking about ice cream! -- finally. I know I can't do this every week, because the absence of butterfat means that these sorbet shakes are actually worse for your blood sugar than a regular milk shake. But maybe in the next few weeks, I'll be able to start making my own smoothies again. I started eating raw tomato and I had some avocado in the past couple days, with no ill effects. Now I'm going to try to eat some fresh strawberries. I won't do peaches, pears, or plums because of the sorbitol, but I'm going to try to go back to eating fresh berries and see how I do. What a pain!

Thanks- H. I am really trying, and this is not easy. But I've now been taking the probiotics for a week, and I think it is working. I still can't eat even a mouthful of dairy without getting sick, but my stomach is no longer rumbling all the time, and I seem to be functioning relatively normally. I'm hoping another two week will do the trick.

Wow - sorbet and sparking water sound delicious! Great substitute for all of us!

HCB -- it's fine when you're worrying about fat or dairy, but it's not exactly a low sugar option. So I am going to save it for when I get really desperate for ice cream! If you want to try this yourself, by the way, I watched the shake-maker, and he added ice cubes as well as sparkling water. The gelato store has different flavors of the sparking water that they will combine, but I chose plain because I have found that the flavored ones don't agree with me. But when I went with a lactose-intolerant friend a few months ago, I think she had orange-flavored sparkling water with raspberry sorbet and said it was very good.
