OK -- I had my first cup of coffee since 6-22 when I got sick. It tasted really, really delicious. I haven't been a big coffee drinker in years, but I do love my cappuccinos. I asked at the coffee bar at Whole Foods, and they said yes-- they would make me a cappuccino with lactose free skim milk that I can buy there and then they just charge me for the shot of espresso. Over the weekend, the nice lady at the coffee bar made me a special hot chocolate: unsweetened cocoa powder and lactose-free skim milk. I added a bunch of cinnamon and about 1/2 tsp of raw sugar and it was heavenly. This past week was also the first time I've drunk even lactose free milk since 6-22. I've had some lactose-free cheese, but I was nervous about drinking milk. But it seems to be OK. I'm really glad, because I think that I'm having trouble NOT being hungry without all the skim milk I was drinking before I got sick. Milk fills me up. I don't know if anyone else has that experience -- but it really works for me. Making progress...

Bless you. I can't even stand the smell of coffee. (I know I'm weird). Glad the milk worked out for you. I still do the hemp or almond milk for me (soak the almonds the night before) or rice milk for bf. How soon before you think you can take your smoothies?

Ok, I think maybe the only thing worse than not having ice cream would be not having lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos and all the yumminess of Starbucks! I'm glad you enjoyed the one they made for you. That can be very tricky! I've experimented with a lot of different "milk" like products to get the calories down on my lattes. Nothing really seems to work. Once I tried almond milk - a latte at only 30 calories a pop. Yeah..no, DISGUSTING!

Annie -- thank you for being sympathetic. Sometimes I get whiny. Heather -- I bought some chocolate almond milk that I am going to try. I was hoping that if I got it real cold and ran it through the blender with ice, I might be able to drink it. We'll see. I'm not sure about the smoothies with fresh strawberries. Tonight I ate a whole bunch of vegetables in a homemade chicken curry. One of the veggies was Thai eggplant -- full of seeds If that doesn't kill me,then I really do think I'm on the road to recovery.

isn't whole foods great?

Gnewfry -- I couldn't live without Whole Foods. I know everyone complains about "whole paycheck' -- but the fact is, for the organic products I buy, our regular supermarket charges way way more. For example, the lactose-free organic skim milk I buy is 80 cents more per half gallon at the regular market. And when you are allergic to pesticides, buying organic is very important. When I was a kid, and farmers were still using DDT, I used to break out in hives from strawberries and peaches -- not because I was allergic to the fruit, but because I was allergic to DDT. I've also found so many sprouted grain and other lower sugar products without artificial sweeteners and preservatives. These are not products you can get at the corner market, and they have been a huge help in lowering my carbs and sugar. So yes, I spend more on groceries than the average person, but I eat a lot healthier than the average person too.

i love it. now we have a grocery store, mariano's, around us and they have good organic food too. i usually spend less in there than in whole foods, plus you can get the regular grocery stuff too if you want. if i go to whole foods, i usually end up going to the grocery store too to get some regular stuff.

Interesting Gnewfry-- because the Mariano's near me was charging way more for organic fruits and veggies than the Whole Foods. Which one are you shopping at?
