"Meet the Man Who Hated Carbs Before It Was Cool - Gary Taubes on how big sugar and big government wrecked the American diet"

https://reason.com/archives/2018/04/14/the-man-who-hated-carbs-before

In 1974, my aunt lost a great deal of weight on this weird diet that let her eat mayonnaise, the original Atkins diet. I was a teen, and wish I had known enough to follow the diet then. On the other hand, in my 20s I did lose the twenty extra pounds that had found me by following the low-carb Scarsdale. I simply did not understand the reasons for weight loss. Instead, I switched to the low-fat mantra that became so popular. When ideas become popular, people usually get them wrong.

"Keto" is popular right now, but people on both sides are getting the basics wrong. (I'm getting something wrong, too.) There is a psycho/physiological component that interferes with my economical needs. Starting this week, I am receiving government meals that follow USDA guidelines, and these are the guidelines that made America fat. Like it or not, economics often rule.

Follow up: After reading other posts, I decided to take a little jar of spiced olive oil with me and to give the bread, fruit, and pasta to my friend.
