Sandy701's Journal, 19 June 2012

3.3 miles walked this AM with the dogs along for 1.2 miles. UGH Index an 8....although it was 88 degrees, there was a fairly nice breeze going, occasional clouds passing by, and the humidity was tolerable. I guess I take my clue on the Index by how sweaty I am by the time I get home - LOL!

I added just a slight amount of distance today because I doubt I'll walk tomorrow. I have a medical appointment in the morning and then it's thrift shop time in the afternoon. I need to really watch myself today, as I can tell I'm anxious about tomorrow's medical appt. It's been over 2 years and I generally don't do "medical" very well...at least, not for myself. I made this appointment as a general check-up kind of thing, but I know a pelvic will be part of it. A necessary evil, I guess.

Anyway, when the anxiety starts to sneak up on me, I find myself reaching for ANYTHING to shove in my face. Already launched into the can of whipped cream, but I think I've now faced that impulse for what it truly is....anxiety. Just need to be especially careful today.

Late last week, I attended a women's health conference, in part, to help me prepare for this week's appointment. When I registered for the seminar, the last thing the person on the phone said to me was that they'd have lunch for me. Surprise! I didn't know this was a luncheon seminar!

In the days leading up to the conference, I thought about what lunch might be and how best to prepare for it. As a health facility, I expected they'd have their own people prepare something.....which may or may not be Atkins-friendly. I was hoping for a salad bar but realized it might be something more akin to a brown-bag kind of lunch.

The timing of the seminar was such that I knew I'd be VERY hungry, so I ended up packing my own complete larger snack....sunflower kernels, string cheese, and an Atkins bar. I also took my own drinks.....in case everything was sugary and no bottled water. Of course, I still hoped for that salad bar.

Anyway, I WAS able to have their lunch, but had a few adjustments to make! I skipped the rolls and croissants and only had the chicken salad. That salad had no noodles (thankfully!) but did have grape halves that I could move aside fairly easily. Who knows about the mayo used, but the chicken was grilled, not breaded, and there were crunchy celery bits, plain nuts of some type, small peppers and I think even some pickles in it....all those were fine. I carefully took some plain fruit salad, but again, moved the oranges and pineapples to the side of my plate and only had the melon varieties and the strawberries. Of course, I skipped the bag of potato chips. As far as drinks were concerned, they did have bottled water which was good because the soda was full-sugar.

Before I went to this event, I had thought about just eating whatever was served and not worrying about it, not making any alternative plans. But then I realized that's not the way I approach things anymore. Will I ever do such a thing? Sure. But on my own terms. I will choose when to be off-plan, not the scheduling of some seminar. If I allow events to determine my eating, rather than me, I'll always find some excuse/event to eat off plan and that's a sure-fire freeway back to higher weights!

Good for you Sandy! You really thought it through, made the best choices out of what was offered and had back-up food with you just in case. Awesome! I agree with you 100%, there will always be choices to make, and events/situations where it's very tempting to just ditch the low-carb WOE and have whatever is offered. Deciding when and where to allow that to happen keeps you in the drivers seat and in control. Congratulations!

Thanks Carol. Isn't it amazing how our attitudes change the longer we're on this WOE? And, except for the croissants and chips, the fruit items I passed on would probably have been OK on Maintenance, as long as I had already tested them out on myself. But I'm not there yet. Have a great day...I'm headed out to the pool too!

Who IS in charge of our choices? WE are! You made great choices for yourself, & it shows in your success...don't ever let ANYbody put you down for what you decide to eat or not eat! We are not helpless or hopeless, we are strong & we have faith in ourselves! You did exactly as I believe I would have!

The word I picked up on most in your journal today is the "A" word. "A" for anxiety. I think you did great by utilyizing your game plan. For a control freak like me staying on top of my eating game makes me feel powerful instead of deciding to go with the flow -- then losing that ability to decide for myself. Once I go off my route -- then I am lost. Does that explanation mmake sense? WORKPLACE eating situations are tough!
