Turn every negative into a positive.

Easier said than done, I know. Thinking back, there have been some pretty crappy times in my life and it's far too easy to give up and throw in the towel. I think there have been times when I did give up. Yet somehow my stubborn side always wins out.

For example, I could easily have dropped out of university. I spent the entire time struggling with mental health problems and suffering from debilitating mobility problems. I even had to take a year out part way through because I had a nervous breakdown. I don't think any of my lecturers expected me to go back after that. Today I proudly hang my degree certificate on my wall. I did that. I did that despite the crazy roller-coaster ride that is my life.

The past few months, life seems to have turned back into a roller coaster. My grandfather collapsed and narrowly avoided death, only to then find out his heart is playing up. Then my dad started to suffer from extreme back pain causing mobility problems and affecting his usual positivity. Then my grandfather caught pneumonia on top of all his other problems, and he's starting to struggle mentally with being so unwell. THEN my cousins husband committed suicide which just totally devastated her. Talk about not raining but pouring.

Never give in. Instead, turn it around!

It would be so easy to give in. I could fall off the wagon and eat cake to comfort myself. I could put the new healthy me on hiatus until I've had time to digest everything that's going on. But that's just not my style. I firmly believe that you need to take what life gives you and learn from it, make something good come out of it and use it to grow as a person.

So how to cope with everything that's happened in 2012 so far? Well I'm going to do a 5k Fun Run, of course! What else would I do? Incidentally, it will also be my first 5k ever. Scary stuff.

I'm doing a 5k!

Not only is this a huge step for me in terms of fitness and health, but I will also be raising money for the Scottish Association for Mental Health. As I've mentioned previously, I'm a sufferer of bipolar disorder and I struggled for many years to keep my condition under control. As a result, the topic of mental health has always been an important one to me.

More recently, however, with the suicide in the family and the other people in my life who are going through hard times I feel really spurred on to commit to doing this 5k and do what I can to help others suffering from mental health difficulties.

The Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH) is Scotland’s leading mental health charity. They have been around since 1923, and with decades of accumulated experience, they’ve become Scotland’s experts in promoting mental health. As well as providing expert support every day to people with mental health problems, they work hard to promote positive mental health throughout Scotland.

A very important part of their work is supporting people who have lost a loved one to suicide. This year, SAMH launched its Suicide Prevention National Programme. They now need to raise funds to deliver this crucial programme: your help could give a future to someone at risk of suicide.

So if life gives you lemons, make the most freaking awesome super tasty lemonade in the world! It's not always easy to turn it around, but I guarantee that you CAN do it. Overcoming difficulties is just part of life, and if we try to make something good out of the bad then no only will we become more sensitive, compassionate, well-rounded people but we'll also make the world a better place. I believe in all of you. You just have to believe in yourself.

Oh ok. Let me try away from my iPad. Sheona, you have to know I care to get up now, as sore as I am. LOL. Thanks Ryan for making me realize it was my medium, not Sheona's page.
