I am totally undecided about diets. The low carb, high fat appeals to me but I am afraid of the amount of fats with this new heart stent. I crave crusty bread, so I am not eating it at all - one bite and I eat the whole loaf. Right now I am doing a mostly low carb, low fat diet, but need more variety. Diabetes and Kidney Disease limit my choices as does my new heart failure diagnosis. I eat mostly salads and protein. Eggs and onions and 1/2 banana for breakfast. Salad with some protein for lunch and some fruit. Big salad with salmon or chicken for supper. Boring. Without salt, food just does not taste that great.

I don't believe in "dieting" coz then when you stop you pick up again. For me it is more of a lifestyle change. I don't cut out all my carbs and sugars coz I know that it wont last and i will end up eating a huge piece of cake or something coz of the cravings. I still eat bread, sometimes wraps, rice etc I just eat it in small quantities. I only eat chicken, Tuna and Mince but every time I just make it different. e.g. Mince you can have Bolognese one night or meatballs, meatloaf, shepard's pie (just use cauliflower instead of potato). Chicken you can make, meatballs, stirfry, chicken soup, chicken curry etc. Tuna there isnt much you can do with it except in a salad. I do eat other meats like pork, steak etc but that I will have once a week mostly over weekends when we have people over. Hope that helps you a bit.

You could select one day in your week, perhaps a Saturday, and make it a cheat day where u enjoy your carbs. Offset such a day by having 2 or 3 x 500calorie days during your week. I don't push this lifestyle onto anyone but I encourage people to Read up about this lifestyle on www.thefastdiet.co.uk

As long as you are eating healthy fats, fats are fine. I've been doing the low carb high fat for a month and have lost a pretty good bit of weight.

If you haven't already, try Mrs. Dash's Table Blend -- no salt, but adds some of the missing flavor you may be experiencing. It's a finer blend than the other Mrs. Dash products so you don't get the "chunkiness" of them. just

Look into the Paleo diet. I read a book written by cardiologist William Davis. It's called Wheat Belly. It's really good and explains why grains and wheat are actually bad for us.

I would ask my doctor for a dietitian's name and also, bump up the spices to replace the salt shaker.

In my opinion, As a Registered nurse? Understanding that you have Coronary Artery disease with a new stent in place, I suggest you contact your Cardiologist for a referral to a nutritionist for the appropriate diet. The nutritionist will design and instruct you in a diet based on your diagnosis, your laboratory values, and your desired weight loss goal. Best wishes. Paula
