catinhat's Journal, 26 June 2017

I was tracking on a different site before I came here. I started there June 5, and on that date I weighed 218. I didn't realize it until I looked back, but I've lost ten pounds in only three weeks!

The gallbladder issues I'm having mean I have to watch my fat intake very, very closely (I have to keep it very low). I'm eating some things I don't think are the best choices, but they are foods lower in fat, like fig bars or graham crackers, and they help me get my calories for a given day, but they are appearing too often in my tracker. I need to look for healthier foods that are filling, like beans. I made some black bean soup tonight that will be tomorrow's supper and the next day's lunch, and I'll just keep working toward making better choices.

I'm also going to explore the possibility of eating low fat and low carb...though I'm not sure how that would work calorically. If you have suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

I'm not suffering from an old way of thinking. Rather, my gall bladder is spasming (very painful) if I have more than a few grams of any kind of fat at a time. I do not disagree with you, but I cannot eat that way at this time.

From what I have read (and its not much) once you start having gallbladder symptoms, you are looking at the need for gallbladder removal. They mention eating lots of fiber. There are plenty of great sources of fiber that are low calorie and low carb as well. Eating grilled veggies prepared with garlic and a tiny bit of olive oil and large, satisfying salads with lean meats and the appropriate amount of dressing seems like a great place to start. They do mention eating low fat until you have resolved the gallstones issue. I doubt a small serving of beans would hurt, but I didn't see any evidence that a diet really high in beans was going to help. Good luck and I hope you will have it all resolved soon.

I think soup sounds like a great idea. That is a very easy way to eat low fat, low carb, moderate protein etc until you resolve the gallstones. But I would focus on more low carb/ high fiber veggies if you can like spinach , kale, broccoli, cauliflower, celery and add in some protein like shredded chicken or drizzle in some scrambled egg white if you can't have the yolks right now. I hope you don't have to eat low fat for too long because among many other benefits, healthy fats help us with a stable mood. I truly believe eating low fat can only be a short term goal. Have you tried eating avocado to see how it affects you? Its pretty gentle on the system but again, i have no experience with gallstones. Best wishes.

Thanks for your input! I had similar troubles with my gallbladder in...1986. I was able to manage things then, and my goal now is to keep very low fat until my Dr. appointment....in a couple weeks. So far, so good. I've been eating a lot of vegetables with a drizzle of lite balsamic dressing, that sort of thing. I wasn't going for 'really high in beans', just using them as an example of a food that is low fat, high fiber, and filling. I had the black bean soup tonight with added tomatoes, cilantro, some grilled boneless skinless chicken breast and a little bit of low fat sour cream. It was really tasty and satisfying. That, a salad and some watermelon made for a really good supper. :)
