3.3 miles walked this morning with both doggies...crisp and sunny with a stiff breeze.

I'm functioning on less sleep today. It stormed last night so my Nervous Nellie was up in our faces, panting and shaking, even with her medication. I really need to work on conditioning her to the ThunderShirt so I can try to utilize it when it storms.

Then, about midnight, in the midst of the storm, our neighbor (yes, that same neighbor, same kind of situation from about a month ago) called to ask for a ride to the hospital. Her husband had been having trouble breathing and so had gone to the hospital in the ambulance. Must have been a quiet approach, as we never heard any siren...we were sound asleep. Anyway, she said she hadn't been dressed to go along right away with the ambulance, so she now needed a ride to get to the hospital. And, as luck would have it, the 2 neighbors who are friends with this couple happen to be gone again, just like a month ago when they were all gone for Thanksgiving too. So, what was I gonna do? Say "no"?

So, I got dressed and drove her to the hospital in the middle of the storm. Not sure what today will hold. She obviously got home somehow, as she picked up her paper from the doorway where I left it. One of the neighbors who's gone, had said he tries to get the newspaper up to the door for them in the morning because neither one is very steady on their feet to make even the short walk down the driveway to the mailbox. Because this neighbor was going to be gone for a couple days, he asked my DH if we could take over the newspaper "re-delivery" while he was gone. OK, fine.

And again, the issue comes up of compassion versus enabling. I look at last night as an emergency and I did what any neighbor should do under those circumstances. I would never have made a midnight phone call to someone whose name I didn't even know a month ago....I would have called a taxi, relative, or a very, very close friend.....but that's me. I'm not sure if the guy was released from the hospital last night, although, from the sound of his condition, I doubt it. I'm already re-preparing myself so that I'm not turned into a private taxi service.

Awww poor little doggie...they don't understand what is going on...so sorry you had to go to the hospital...but your a good neighbor to do so..Some times these situations keep coming..we had neighbors that were very needy..always wanting to borrow or something all the time..now that we live out in the boonies we no longer have that problem...Try to get some rest...:O)

I am glad you took her, it was the right thing to do. Poor puppies, I will try to remind you to work on the Thundershirt conditioning...what is the process for that anyway? So, both you & the doggies are sleep deprived today...I know where they will be (sleeping), maybe you can sneak a nap in?

GG... conditioning her to the ThunderShirt is like any other kind of dog training....lots of no-stress time, lots of treats and/or clicks....all done when it's NOT raining or thundering out! She should rather quickly make the association that the TS is a really GOOD thing! She's had it on for a few minutes once or twice and she seems quite comfortable wearing something; this is good considering she has never worn any dog "apparel,"

Bren, I feel better now after catching up on my sleep. If my neighbors' situation were a short-term issue or if it were an out-of-the-blue occasion, then there's no problem....just take care of everything until the situation resolves itself. But this happened back over Thanksgiving, and MORE than a few times before that, before I met them. It's obvious they need to make other arrangements so that she is not stranded every time her husband is not available to drive her (or himself) somewhere. Having to rely on whether or not a neighbor is home and can or cannot get you to the grocery store or to the hospital, is not a good, permanent solution for anyone. Maybe that's why DH wants to head out into the boonies when he retires!
