Windlepoones's Journal, 28 September 2016

Today started a little differently. I had a 10:00am appointment at my doctors. My Dr, or Vlad the impaler as I now refer to her, had a blood test scheduled for me to check my Hba1c level. I thought it was a fasting blood test, so didn’t eat anything from 22:00 / 10:00pm the night before.

Needless to say she was a little late in seeing me so half an hour after the prescribed appointment, (10:30am) she did the deed. As she withdrew the needle with a little vial now filled with my blood I asked did she really have to take half an arm full. She chuckled and said there was no need to fast, because it’s a measure of the average glucose levels over the last three months.

She asked if I was doing anything with the rest of my day. I thought for a moment and decided there and then, I would have a breakfast in my local pub, (Very close to the Doctors surgery) a J.J. Moons and then as the underground station was almost next door to the pub I would continue onto the British Museum to pursue my anthropological interests.

Before going into Moon’s I popped into Aldi and bought a pot of double cream, only 69p then hit the pub. I plonked my pot of double cream on the bar and ordered a large breakfast and a coffee. The bar tender asked me if I always carried a pot of double cream around with me. I replied, “Only if I’m going to drink your coffee it always tastes awful”. I was quiet surprised at his honest response, he agreed.!

He seemed bemused at my breakfast request. I stated I was allergic to hash browns, baked beans and toast, so in place of them I requested doubling up on the eggs and bacon. Well I’m not allergic to any of them, but it seemed much simpler than trying to explain a LCHF diet.

Two cups of coffee drowned in double cream later and the altered farm house breakfast. I was replete and ready for my trip to the British museum. The day was sunny and much hotter than I had expected, so carried my jacket on my arm all day long. As I emerged into the sunshine at Euston station’s concourse, I knew I was in central London I could taste the noxious diesel pollution in the air.

A short walk from the station I entered the British museum I was amazed at the sheer number of school parties laced with Japanese, Chinese, German and Americans that filled the display halls. My prime reason for visiting was the early Sumerian and Akkadian exhibits, the earliest dating from 6000 B.C. Their civilisations were incredibly advanced. Some of the exhibits of cuneiform texts were presented as small clay tablets in their own envelope enclosures of inscribed clay. They described the same sort of things taking place to-day; births deaths marriages, divorces, accounts, politics, battles, conquests and so on.

On another floor of the museum were very fine and beautiful displays of later Sumerian artefacts and wall friezes from the reign of Nimrod, (Nimrud) 883–859 B.C.

Although the main reason for my visit was not Egyptian, I couldn’t resist perusing the displays of Egyptian artefacts including the mummies and sarcophaguses. I felt sadden at one of the displays which attracted more attention than the other Egyptian exhibits. It was the mummy of a fine old lady. She had been unwrapped in the 19th century and her blackened remains put on display for all to see. The clicking of cameras and people taking mobile phones photos reminded me of our unfeeling and relentless paparazzi.

Leaving the museum I had a raging thirst, the first pub I came to was another Moon’s pub, just outside Euston station. I was shocked at the prices of the pints of beer; they were asking £4.65 for a pint of London pride, clearly tourist’s prices. I decided to get home and pay a sensible £2.65 for the same pint in my local.

I arrived home in time for dinner - another missed lunch. Oh well it was a grand day out so I topped off my calorie count with a few glasses of wine.

Another very interesting day! Do you live near London then, Windle? I'm just 20 miles or so north of the capital. Rarely go in though.
