warrenwinter's Journal, 22 March 2016

I, today, am going off track here. I hope this may help someone. You ever see ads, how to beat the banks? Let's say you are married with equal incomes, and equal bills. You get a 30 yr. loan, and rack up lots of bills. Interest rates collapse. You decide to refinance, and payoff all bills. But you see, that if you get a 15 yr loan, you can pay your house in half the time, and pay bills too. You are also worried about taxes. You get that loan at 3 1/2% interest, and pay bills, but you learn, that if you make bi-weekly payments, you can pay the house in 8 years at 1% interest, and this is what ads call, "cheating the banks". At the same time, your spouse defers income by setting up a retirement tax shelter. Sheltering from taxes a good part of her income. You now, have more mortgage interest writeoff, and a tax shelter for retirement. She even donates to many charities. But the negative is, most months, you have two house payments, and Jan. and July you have three. This forces you to adjust, the lack of bills, to make almost 100% of your income to save for those two months, but you are sheltering from Uncle Sam, and the banks. Food for thought?

Legal tax evasion is a must if you can do it. Hopefully one day our tax system changes for the better but not sure if that will ever happen. As far as the food saving for "dieting" yes I think it does save money in the long run. With all these "deals" at the fast food chains some ppl think that's a bargain and unfortunately give there money to junk fill their bodies bc they don't want to shop around and spend time in the kitchen. So then they contribute to the obesity rate. Vicious cycle. Isn't San Luis Obispo a city without fast food chains? I think I read that and when I was considering a move to Cali that is where I was going to go. Oh well, we just have to be strong and drive those chains out of business or force them to prepare w better ingredients. Have a goooood day Warren!!

I brought this scenario, which is exactly what we did, but the mortgage payments get scary, but was happy with tax results. This really helped us, but not sure how long I can keep doing it exactly this way, but the good thing is my actual mortgage payment is a lot less, than what I pay bi-weekly. I can go back at anytime. I was happy about getting taxes back. It seems to be working well.

Suzy, the scary thing here in the U.S., is the changes in Social Security, that so many depend on, and are obviously going to change for the worse. People need to understand that they can never depend on government for their well being.

Thanks Misty. San Luis Obispo is as nice as it gets around here. A wonderful place, if you can work there. You know, you make a great point, that trying to have a healthy diet with such bad choices staring you in the face, is exactly why, we have such huge diet problems in this country. I'm losing weight, but in general my diet is crap. I need to be more conscious about it.

My brief experience with the bi-weekly payment thing was a joke. They missed a payment, the late fee was more than the extra paid. The only real difference I could see after I looked closer (which for me always happens AFTER I try something like this) was that you end up paying one extra mortgage payment per year. And since I pay a few hundred dollars extra per payment as a matter of principal (Ha! did you see what I did there? Nudge nudge, wink wink) I pay far more extra than that per year already. On the other hand, a 15 year mortgage at today's interest rates is a no-brainer. To me a thirty year mortgage is basically a life sentence. As far as taxes go, I'm with Thoreau -- I keep my accounts on my thumbnail. My retirement savings is about the only "tax write-off" I bother with. Most years, anyway; this year I didn't even itemize because I knew the standard deduction would be greater. The amount of interest I pay on my mortgage is less than the standard deduction; and I don't have a whole lot of business deductions or any of that nonsense. I do make a pretty healthy retirement contribution to keep my taxes a bit lower, but I don't mind paying taxes. It is the dues I pay to live in a (semi)functional society.

Good points! You can always make payments to principal. I do like that mine are automatic, but can be changed at anytime. Thanks for your input.

Suzy, I think you are talking about Obamacare. A good alternative to expensive healthcare, but republicans hate it because it helps common folk, who don't have the money for expensive healthcare. I'd be on it if not for my wife. Funny, hypocritical Ted Cruz has his family on it, but swears he would repeal it, if he becomes President. Typical politician!

A little better, but my knee is problematic and I need to see another doctor if I ever want a solution. Thanks for the thought! I thought is was really messed up yesterday, but rehabbing at home really helps. I'm back walking pretty normal again, but very painful.

I have obamacare and all I do is pay high premiums. My plan pays nothing until deductable is meet, deductable is so high you can't make it. so you pay the premium and also pay your doctor and pay for your drugs. So what good is it except keep you from paying a penaty at the end of the year for not having health insurance. So glad hubby is on medicare and he doesn't have this junk. and sorry, I am a Republican.

Sweet Georgia, I understand that you are upset that being forced to have Obamacare, but you might not realize what a deal you are getting not only from Obamacare, but from Medicare. I wish I could sit here and write a ten page response to you, but it wouldn't matter anyway. You only get what you pay for in our country. Your party wants to take O care away, and Medicare. Socialist programs they call them. My employer told me. Sorry, you, as a teacher didn't put into Medicare, and we only give you healthcare that is supplemented by our government. So because you don't have Medicare you can no longer pay the $1200 a month to have your Premium PPO Healthcare. Lots of luck, Mr. Winter! Well, I was SHOCKED! Lucky, my wife works, and qualifies for Medicare or I'd be SHIT out of luck. Go on believing that government insurance hurts you somehow. I WILL NEVER BELIEVE IT!

Suzy, I love to get on a soapbox. I also know this is not the place for politics. I got off of Facebook because some people wanted to shoot me dead. Lol Its all good, but I do get frustrated. Lol

The term "Soapbox" has to do about getting on stage and talking, and debating, like these candidates do. I'm fine. I actually loved Facebook, and it was fun, but I can be immature and stupid. It's bad when a 65 year old man acts like he is 15. My stupid relatives were on there too, and that bothered me. then when all my wife's friend friended me, it was time to leave. lol

I am not upset about anything. Just voicing my opinion while I still can. Hubby and I both have paid into ss and medicare all our lives. Because I am not of age yet to draw medicare but am simi retired and draw my social security, my check is 934 a month my obama care is 714 a month If I wasn't married I would have a hard time living on what is left. But God will provide.
22 Mar 16 by member: Sweet Georgia Peaches
That sounds crazy, but were you able to get decent insurance before that? Obamacare, like Medicare, is cheaper insurance because it is supplemented by, actually, the SS Fund. That's why I couldn't keep my healthcare, they wanted the money from Medicare. They were happy I didn't qualify. Once your gone from the plan you are gone forever. Obamacare is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but people need healthcare. System can't be supported by people showing up to ER for their healthcare. I say make it better.

On my wife's plan my primary doctor said, " Oh well, Warren! Welcome to European Healthcare!", with a laugh. In other words, my old plan was very superior to her's.

He also says that Medicare is a "Great plan!" but I don't qualify.

yes my hubby's medicare is great. He has had all sort of stuff done and we have had no out of pocket expense. His drugs which he is a heart patience and has 7 drugs he takes daily are $7. Before I simi retired and was working full time my company provided our insurance was $24 a week with a $1500 deductable my drugs where 7 to 15 dollars. I just don't like being told I have to have something that I can't afford. 1 more year then I will qualify for medicare, so I will make it. End of story. Let's get back to weight loss sucess!
