TiredOfBeingSick's Journal, 09 October 2015

I keep sitting here writing out shopping lists of the foods I want to eat. Not unhealthy foods, things like home made meatloaf, roast beef and potatoes, nice, naturally sweet fruit salad, you know, good, balanced, nutritionally significant foods. Then, when I finish writing out the list the horrid truth hits me: I can't afford to get these good foods and, even if I could, my health issues will make preparing those good foods into a struggle since I can only do small bits of work without rest due to my fibromyalgia and joint issues. I've written out the things I want to be able to get so I can eat well but, again, I know it's going to turn out the same way. We won't have the money for bananas and avocados and bean sprouts so the only choices left that can be afforded are dollar store packs of ramen, canned meats to actually get some protein and other salt packed, unhealthy canned and boxed $1 food items.

People love to tell the poor and sick that they need to eat better but the harsh reality is that we can't afford to. Even people like me who would much rather eat healthy, tasty, good foods over the disgusting junk foods and convenience meals can't afford to eat right. Sometimes it really isn't about choice, it's what you're forced to eat because that's all you can afford to eat.
