BrandyRelaxing's Journal, 23 June 2011

So my excitement for yesterday is that I have to go to PEI to teach a course the week of July 18th. It's really a good and a bad thing...

Good things:
-I've never been to Prince Edward Island, so it'll be a good chance to see some sights

Bad things:
-Having to buy 2 plane seats - I know it's covered by work, but it still sucks!
-What if I don't have any opportunities to exercise or eat well? I don't know the area much, so it might be a bit of a nightmare week! It might be better if it was at a hotel, but it's at a University and generally the gyms there suck (plus they still charge you, where they don't at most of the hotels I've stayed at).

Okay, I'm probably just whiny, I just would really like to be 269 (70 pounds lost and half way to my goal) before I go on vacation at the end of August, and eating out all the time is not a nutritionally great thing.

Don't stress about it too much. Business travel is definitely challenging but not impossible. Don't be afraid to speak up in restaurants & let them know you're trying to watch what you eat. The more specific you can be, the better, for example, "Can you recommend some options that are lower in fat/carbs/sodium/[whatever you're watching]?" At hotels I've run up & down stairs, rented bikes for sightseeing, & in general I try to work activity into everything to offset the food as much as possible. You are right, nutritionally eating out all the time isn't great. But for a week it's pretty harmless in the grand scheme of things. You know you'll do the best you can to make good choices, & you should give yourself permission to enjoy a couple of treats as well. If you feel you MUST offset that dessert, then take a long walk in the evening before you turn in. It can be done!

Brandy girl, I am away now on business, staying in a suite, brought my veggies and protein powder with me along with my dumbbells. Im headed out now to see what your elliptical machine is like. LOL. You will do brilliantly.

It was very difficult. I seemed fun at first, but I didn't like the feel in that I was not in control on the programmerd workout. I didnt really know what i was doing. I wound up (very much at home) on the recumbent bike. (No surprise there). I think I need to give the elliptical some more chances.

More seriously, you should be able to get some exercise in, even at a university gym. Especially in the summer, when there will be less pressure on the equipment. I have positive thoughts about the University of PEI (a journal there, now sadly defunct, was the first to publish an article by me, back in 1999).

Well one thing that I discovered after my post was that there is a mall about 1-1.5KM away - so an easy walk - which is awesome! Shopping plus a walk... that's a win in my books!
