Katsolo's Journal, 27 March 2022

new pics. Vine is nasty and full of clumps of thorns. Fruit has little leaves/spikes you can see in pics. it is not persimmon. Fruit looks like tomato inside but with a few dark seeds. Smells grassy but I didn't dare taste because I'm allergic to enough things in my life already. neighbor thinks it's some exotic thing.

Edit: Jergens123 found the answer: PERESKIA - Tropical Barbados Gooseberry Thorny Rose

There are several apps you can download that are for plant identification and care. Snap a picture of the plant and the name pops up along with all the info for it. I used to have one on my phone but no more. It doesn’t look familiar to me either

I thought of persimmon but the leaves growing out of it suggests - Do not eat that!

It could be what is called a "Flying Dragon" but I would not bet my life on it.

I stopped on that one. I may look at it again. I’m going to post on next door. Someone will know.

If you see any types of fruits like that - with the leaves growing out of the fruit - it is poisonous - do not eat that - If I was you - I would get that right out of the house.

I found it - Katsolo - It is a PERESKIA - Tropical Barbados Gooseberry Thorny Rose and the photo even has the leaves growing out of it - IT IS NOT POISONOUS but that scared me - Pereskia godseffiana is commonly called Barbados, Spanish or West Indies Gooseberry, Lemon Vine, Sweet Mary, Blade Apple, Rose or Leaf Cactus Pereskia is native to the rain forests of South America, but, nonetheless, is a true member of the cacti family. This cactus starts out as a heavily thorned, erect, woody shrub, and then spreads out to run and vine. Left unchecked, it will easily climb to cover a true. The leaves are cactus like and are a bright golden yellow. The new growth begins burgundy and fades to peach. The coloration will vary depending on light levels. This plant flowers in the summer and fall. The flowers range in color from white to creamy yellow tinged pink, and have a light somewhat lemony fragrance. An edible fruit follows the flowers. The fruit is commonly used to make jam in Jamaica. Pereksia is a unique item and makes a great conversation piece. It is frequently grown in hanging baskets, or hanging over a wall or fence. Its thorny habit makes it useful as a boundary planting to discourage intruders.

Some say that it tastes like apricot - if you have some food allergies - that kind of natural jam might be good for you - you never know.

That plant has many medicinal qualities that are worth looking at.

Make your neighbor try it.

I’m intrigued. There must be an Agricultural or Farm Bureau around the San Diego area. They might be able to help. Or a big nursery
