Some things I learned in Phase 1:

1. If you're worried people will look at you funny for not having that piece of cake or for eating something suspiciously healthy at a social function - just tell them. You're on a diet. It's going well, and although [whatever it is] REALLY looks good, you're going to make the choice your doctor would be proud of. I didn't get a single derogatory comment. What I got instead was a whole lot of support, people checking on me, helping me find things that would work, and lots of encouragement.

2. Food is an inanimate object. It just sits there. I know we all joke about a dessert "calling our name" or whatever, but it doesn't. It does not stand up on little legs, walk onto our plates, our forks, or into our mouths. It just. sits. there. And you know what? It'll still be there when you're at your goal weight and if you still want a treat at that time. They are not going to run out of ding-dongs, doritos, or even cupcakes. And if a friend made something really special? I bet they'll be happy to make you a batch later on, to celebrate, when you can have just a normal portion.
