CarmenPL's Journal, 06 March 2014

So I haven't weighed myself since my powerlifting meet on 22nd Feb - I know I got a good amount of my weight down for that with water loading over the week prior to that and some of that will come back. I celebrated breaking the AZ state squat record and the 70 lb of weight loss with a glorious meal of Mexican food, a few beers and a relaxed week of minimal exercise and increased calories while my body recovered from what I put it through during the meet.

This was an important week for me. It gave me the opportunity to savour the rewards of my work, to take the load off my shoulders after all the stress that lead up to ensuring I made the weight class (although I ended up doing it easily), and remember there's life away from the scale and the barbell.

After that nice refeed week, I have gone back to my usual carb backloading diet (written for me by Renaissance Periodization), just with a slightly increased healthy fat intake to ease back into dieting, and this week has been great - loads of cardio (steps over 10,000/day) and a couple of nice heavy workouts (squats and bench so far). Next week, I will drop my fats again and make the final push to 170 lbs before I change course and begin gaining back quality muscle mass in preparation for the USPA National Powerlifting Meet in Las Vegas in July, where I have to compete in the 181 lb weight class.

Deep tissue massage tonight, heavy deadlifting tomorrow, and speed benching on Saturday. Saturday night is a cheat meal with friends at an Australian restaurant here in Tucson! I can't wait, and I definitely hope their sausage rolls pay close tribute to the real thing back home.

I have a few recipes I'm going to upload soon, ones that I have written for www.bigunitbarbell.com that have really helped me drop the last 10 lbs I had to lose prior to the meet, and fits in with the macronutrients called out for in my diet from Renaissance Periodization.

If anyone has ideas, suggestions or requests for recipe ideas, let me know! I would love to come up with new things that people can try. Also not afraid of trying new things - I have given most of the Walden Farms range a try!

I'm looking forward to the recipes. Just looking at the food you've eaten today has me drooling. I'm so pleased to have your progress to follow here. It's something a little out of my experience. I just pretend to lift compared to you. Hey! I'm old! No laughing!

Haha no laughing at all! Strength training is more of a marathon than weight loss - weight loss is comparatively quick compared to gaining strength! My bench press is a testament to that! Thanks for the kind words :D
