SaintViper's Journal, 02 November 2010

Had a bit of a coming out at work yesterday. Not not that kind! (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) Had a team breakfast and while the other had their fried eggs and hash-browns, I just had coffee. Then when I was working late people asked why and I told them I had taken a long lunch to go work out. Someone from our other office mentioned that I looked thinner and then it all came out. I'm feeling pretty confident about the process now, so I'm now worried about telling everyone about it and then failing.

I'm getting really tempted to buy some new clothes that fit. It seems like a waste of money because anything new will probably be too big in a few months, but at least a couple pairs of pants and some shirts that aren't ridiculously baggy would be nice. Maybe I'll go browse the clearance racks...

Yeah!!! People are so funny in how they react to weight loss. As an example, I ran into a good friend's husband in the store just the other day. Ironically it was in the ice cream aisle. I was buying the ice cream for my husband not for me (I don't really have trouble resisting ice cream actually- muffins, cookies, cake, yes, but not ice cream). Anyway, he didn't say a WORD about the weight loss or anything. But apparently he went home and carried on about it to the wife who then reported back to me. And I TOTALLY hear ya on the buying of clothes department. I still have all of my bigger clothes (just in case). And resisted buying smaller clothes for a long time. Now I'm starting to get some that fit but it's hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that I no longer need to be in the large and XL sections. ESPECIALLY in the pants section. Very weird sensation.

Every time you mention your husband, it's something about how much ice cream he eats. Makes me wonder what my wife is saying about me, LOL.

the man does consume A LOT of ice cream. Also gummy bears (we buy them at Costco in bulk volume), potato chips (he thinks he's healthy because he gets the reduced fat ones), fritos, and plain bagels with butter. Not to mention the gallons of expensive micro brewed beer. Often, the above mentioned, is his "dinner". Not necessarily in that order. I did notice the other day that he's starting to "show" the food baby a bit. LOL!!!

I haven't been tempted that much by junk food since starting this. Now that you mention it though, I could go for some nachos.

Oh that's his "go-to meal". But his nachos suck!!! If I'm gonna have nachos, I want all the yummy stuff all over them. The sour cream, the olives, the flavorful meat, the beans, the peppers, the guac, the salsa, etc. He uses two ingredients. Chips and cheese. (rolling eyes) There are days where I get a neck cramp from shaking my head.... If I am having a terrible hankering and just gotta have some of the same, I make a reasonable fascimile: a lower cal quesadilla with one tortilla. I used a La Tortilla brand (they use olive oil instead of any other oils or fats and oat fiber) so you can have 1 shell for 100 cals, then use reduced fat cheese, use some skinny cow cheese spread or hummus to add some filler and creaminess to it, then use minimal amounts of everything else. And I always use my non fat plain greek yogurt in lieu of sour cream for stuff. I feel satisfied then but don't break the "caloric bank" for the day.

Ah, we call your kind of nachos "Macho Nachos". I usually make his kind, though slathered in salsa. You obviously make quite an effort to find healthy alternatives for things you like to eat. Have you always done that or is it something new since you decided to loose weight?

I made some awesome Nachos on Saturday, portioned everything out and it was a bit high in calories, but still reasonable and better than going to town. Try Ross for clothes if one is near you or like a TJ Maxx or something like that. I am holding off on my next shopping spree for under 200. I completely understand what you mean about feeling it's a waste. I have just been sticking with basics and even though my clothes are hanging off me I feel like more people mentioned my weight loss when I was at 30 lbs lost then they do now. Don't worry about failing, you are doing AWESOME!

I probably gave it a half-hearted attempt before. But now I have really dialed it in. Knowledge is power.

I'm just curious, SV I don't know if you are the cook in the household, but if not does your wife keep your caloric intake in mind while cooking? I know that if J was cooking I would be screwed, he would not measure a damn thing. His diet used to be filled with crap and he has dialed it in quite a bit, but he still has to have dessert every night. He's an ice cream and gummy bear junkie too. Luckily he's really liking the 5 ingredient only haagen dazs right now.

We split the cooking duties roughly evenly. (That wasn't always the case but I think I've improved quite a bit.) She has always been a relatively healthy cook. My problem was just eating too much of it. With that in mind, I haven't asked her to change how she cooks. I just need to take responsibility for myself and eat an appropriate amount of it. I've also tried to avoid wholesale changes to how I eat. I don't want to create a diet that's not sustainable and then go back to how things were before. I'm gradually making changes that I'm comfortable with to meet specific goals, but I'm not exactly a health food person just yet.

That's great that you share in that responsibility. I think that your approach is very smart. Maybe I need to take some initiative to get J acquainted with my scale and the measuring cups. He's the kind of cook that will dirty everything in the kitchen to make mac and cheese. Poor guy. I'm definitely not all the way there either with the health food, but I am working on it.
