phibs's Journal, 10 December 2012

I've been having a lot of ups and downs these last few days, one minute I'm getting a real 'exercise high' and sense of achievement as I steadily increase my time at the gym (I did 50 mins today!) and the next I'm feeling low and crabby and impatient to see any progress. I think the amount I was eating didn't help - I was sticking to about 850-950 calories a day, purely because it seemed like I could, but last night I decided it just didn't feel right and maybe wasn't healthy, so I've upped it to around 1200.

Really hope I might have a little break-through soon, I'd love to drop another 3lbs before seeing all my friends and family back in my home town before christmas! But in the mean time I'm feeling proud of the fact that I've done some form of exercise every day for two weeks, and that I've been increasing my stamina and pushing myself.

Icky side note - a girl at the gym with a long ponytail who was cycling next to me flicked sweat from her ponytail on to my bare arm and chest! Mega gross! I shall have to wear a towel cape if this continues...

I think you're right, Phoebe. Really, it's not healthy to try and stay below 1000 calories a day for anyone, especially someone who is exercising as much as you do. Upping it to 1200 is good, but I have a feeling you could actually eat more than that, and possibly speed up your loss. Have you calculated your RDI through FatSecret? Great job on the exercise!! And ewwwww on the icky side note.. lol. People should keep their sweat to themselves lol. I'm glad you're feeling a bit better :)

Phibs I lost most of my 50 pounds on 1300 a day. I don't see a problem with 1200. 850-900 is just seriously a bit low. I have read a lot of crap on fitness websites and in fitness magazines that say to feed your body that low of calories actually creates a starvation response, where your body wants to hold on to fat because it perceives it is being starved. I think you'll do much better on 1200 calories. I am sorry you got sweat on you from that other gym bird. It IS objectively nasty, but the more you work out, the nastier even you will get. When I am running 4 miles, I sweat so much it's disgusting. I have to wear an Axl Rose bandana around my head to soak up the sweat. I do get the machine all nasty from my sweaty hands on the heart rate sensors. And when I am running, I run the whole 58 minutes. I don't stop to go to the loo to blow my nose or do whatever is kind of gross. I'm there to work, not be a lady. Welcome to gym gross-out!
