Datastar's Journal, 19 November 2012

I've spent my life mostly ignoring fitness and nutrition. I am 48yrs. old and have truly decided to take care of myself for the rest of my life. Often, I don't know where to start, I get overwhelmed and give up. I guess I'm an all or nothing kind of person, it most often looks like all is too much, so I don't bother starting, or I start and soon give up yet again. I finally came to the conclusion that a "small change" on a daily and/or weekly basis could place me into good habits I can live with for years to come. I am also in training to quit smoking. What I mean by training is, I am learning about the brainwashing that keeps smokers wanting to smoke long after the slight physical cravings are gone. I don't have a lot of money to buy different foods and prefer to cook simple recipes. I hope to gain the maximum nutrition I can at the lowest possible cost with a moderate amount of effort to prepare and cook. I look forward to meeting other people like myself, as well as those who have spent their life eating well and staying fit. I chose to write my first journal entry as though I am speaking to the community. I am glad to meet the person reading this right now :)

I, too, am 48 and when I talked with my wellness coach from work, she told me that small changes are the best way to lose weight. I ignored her advice because she didn't really know me or know how bad I had become in my eating habits and lack of movement. Here are the changes I have made: I write down everything (and I mean everything!) that I eat in my diet calendar. Often, the thought of entering it or knowing the extra calories associated with the food stop me from eating it in the first place. I have switched to low fat eating in the hopes of reducing my cholesterol and triglycerides without medications. I eat a salad for lunch almost every day. I don't do any meal plans, count points, or things like that and I am averaging a loss of 9 pounds a month. The last thing (and probably most important!) is set aside time for me to walk, workout, think, and everything about my own wellbeing that I had neglected for years. I am still parenting two teenagers and they have been remarkably supportive. Welcome to FatSecret. There are a number of folks just like you and me and this is a great place to start that new phase of your life where you are taking care of yourself.

I understand how hard change is. What I know for sure is that when you truly make your mind up anything can be done. I’m tired of being tired, achy, slow, fat, out of shape, and depressed about it. Its not going to be easy, but it will be worth it. We can do it. Add me if any of you would like a buddy
