April Rochester's Journal, 15 July 2018

I recently read some body-positivity information, which confused me about weight loss. Weight loss is something I still want. I achieved a bit today in fact, rather than gain weight, which was a pleasant surprise. I am slightly considering weight loss surgery because I could lose much more weight and get to my goal sooner than my 40th birthday. There are issues with both gastric bypass and sleeve surgeries of course. Also, my husband is against surgery, likely because his father has had so many, and of course surgery in itself is dangerous. This kind of surgery is laproscopic, so it is less invasive. Plus, if I have gastric bypass, the surgery is reversible, for better or worse. Then there's dumping syndrome with gastric bypass. With sleeve there's reflux, which I already have.

Erguiaga this is all very true... rosio I’m joking about it being me but yes all you say is true. I’m a perfect example of weight loss surgery success that turned nearly fatal.... at age 43 I’m learning about my emotions, nutrition and how everything is connected!!!! And yes I’ve still got all my excess skin. My newly built muscles are hiding under my skin. Ugh. But they are there. My strength at gym proves it. Number on scale becomes less important. How are you blood results? Sugar? Blood pressure? Sleep? Focus? Moods? All those are non scale victories. The number on the scale is only a part of successful weight loss. I was 160-165lb at 5’10” for 10 years. Sick; anemic, depressed, allergies, heartburn, irregular periods, moodiness, tiredness. Brittle hair and nails. Constant vomiting, constipation. Low levels of everything. Hot tempered, obsessed. But I was slim n tall. Yep, on the outside it looked great. Inside I was dying slowly. Miserable but slim... now my case a little extreme I’m sure but my point is that I never dealt with until now why I got obese (280lb at my heaviest). You got this. Like for real!!! ❤️

As a hospital RN I've seen countless patients with long term negative results from all types of weight loss surgery. I'd have to write a book to cover all the things that go wrong with life changing illnesses. Not to even mention that losing a large amount of weight fast leave all the loose skin hanging all over your body which requires several major expensive surgeries to remove the skin. Also remember after any wt loss surgery you have to follow an extremely rigid diet that involves portion size and certain food types.

I considered the surgery myself (for over 10 years I kept considering it), but determined that it would be something I would regret. I'm so glad that I didn't.

I agree with Jessie Quinn I have seen nothing but problems and major side effects with gastric.
