Deb_N's Journal, 13 October 2014

Before I joined FatSecret I was walking very little. 300 steps was about it. I am retired so I was walking from the computer to the kitchen three times a day. After I got my pedometer heart rate monitor, I walked about 1300 steps on a "good" day, when I bought groceries. On the day that I joined FS, November 25, I only walked 785 steps, because I was sitting at the computer reading everything. ;) I knew that I had to walk more and eat less. Today I checked my data on my step count and saw that four days after I joined FS I walked 4027 steps! In the month before my February doctor appointment I was walking an average of 5280 steps a day. So I think joining FS was the best thing that ever happened to me, for many reasons. The things I have learned from the members here cannot be enumerated. Thank all of you for the support and encouragement! Even after my doctor appointment, I was not slacking off and walked an average of 4146 steps each day. As I approach my goal weight I have been walking less, but my food choices are low calorie and I am never hungry. If I have a restaurant meal or dinner at someone else's house, I walk more steps earlier in the day to make sure that I never burn less calories than I consume. This plan is working for me. :)

Thanks for sharing your journey. It helps me realize and appreciate the changes I've made. And encourages me when I'm struggling. You've done super!

Thats great to hear Deb! Congrats! Your story prompted me to come up with a quote. "If you don't move, it's hard to lose!!" :)

You may want to add some strength training to your exercise mix, Deb. You don't want to wind up with sarcopenia like me.

Thanks for you continued inspiration and support. 3.6 lbs left to go to Goal! Yowsa! You too with Sweet2th will be joining the success stories very shortly! (although, we are all success stories, just for sticking with it and not giving up! That is success!) We're cheering you on! Go for it!

I had been wondering how you were walking so little when you started. You had mentioned the 300 steps earlier. You have come a long way. Chris does have a good suggestion about doing some strength exercises. It's good for healthy bones and your whole body. It helps my arthritis tremendously.

Thanks, everyone! I have the 1 and 3 pound hand weights, so I am doing those. I just do planks and leg raises in the morning when I wake up. Next summer when we go on vacation I might get access to real gym equipment. :)

Good for you, Deb! I was the same way. Now I aim for 10,000 a day. I don't always make it, but aiming for it is key!

I'm also aiming for that 10,0000 mark, I've made it on weekends a few times, hard to do when you are chained to a desk all day.

LOL - I knew I was changing a bit too when I went to a hotel and thought 'oh, cool, gym equipment to try' rather than my usual concern of whether the mini bar was stocked and how late they delivered room service. It is neat, and a little less crowded than a public gym. Maybe you could make friends w/a local hotel to let you use it until you do get to the vacay?
