DairyKing's Journal, 23 August 2014

Good Afternoon, FS Warriors! I am alive. I have survived the 10K, and even better, I finished it! Boy was it hot and humid. I carried a 20 oz. bottle of Gatorade in my hand the whole race. Well, it didn't have 20 oz. when I finished. I think there were 3 water stops. I took the water and poured it over my head. Shocking! But who knows, it may have been just the edge I needed to finish. I've got a book that says that, for every 5 degrees greater than 65 degrees, you need to add 30 seconds to your pace. Well, I figured it was about 80 during the race, and I should add 1:30 to my pace. Well, if it had been cooler, and a lot less humidity, I probably would have run at about an 11:30 pace. As it was, I averaged a little over 13 min/mile pace. I finished at about 1:20:00. Not too sure exactly, it could have been 1:21. There were chips in the bibs, and I crossed the start line at over 1 minute. So, depending on whether or not they record the start and finish times based on the chip, or just the finish times based on the chip, it could be either. I'll see when the results are posted. Either way, I would have been happy to finish under an hour and a half. The weather, especially the humidity, was really taking it's toll on me, I started out at a 10:30 pace, and by the 3rd mile I was running over 13 minute miles and finished up the 6.2 miles right at a 13:20 pace. My heart rate averaged between 170 and 185 BPM. That's where I can really tell the influence of heat and humidity on my running. I've sucked down 3 bottles of water, a cup of coffee, a half-pint of orange juice, a 20 oz bottle of Sunny Delight, and my urine is still fairly yellow. I know, TMI, but it's the truth. I did stop for my traditional trophy - a sausage egg and cheese biscuit at Hardees. Some people want one of those brass statues posing on a hardwood base; I'll take the biscuit. LOL! You wouldn't believe it, I was praying for rain, but gave up after I saw the sun was so bright. However, 20 minutes after leaving Hardees, probably 30 miles away from the race, the skies turned black and it poured and poured. Where's the justice in that? Go figure.

I may not have been the fastest horse in the stable, but I got the job done:

Deja Vu!

Not more than 30 miles from the race; where's the justice?

All for this! And of course, the Hardees biscuit!

Toodles, My Friends!

So happy for you! I kept checking back to see if you'd posted. Great job! Really inspirational. I won't be running anytime soon, but I hope to ridemy exercise bike and you've motivated me to get started!

Good job finishing the 10k!! Only 80, be glad you weren't running in Kansas city, 92 @ 10:00am. High humidity just a tiny breeze. 80 would still be hot running.

Excellent accomplishment. Something to be proud of and to share with the grandkids when you're old and feeble. ;~)

Thank you all. When the race started it was 92% humidity. I think I can take the heat, but the humidity just kills me. That's why you see me with a different shirt on at Hardees; there's no way the one I ran in was going to be dry enough to go into a restaurant; they'd have to follow me around with a mop. My first 10K, my first medal, but I earned it. I didn't think much about the 100 ft. rise in elevation near the turnaround point, but you were on a constant uphill climb for 3/4 of a mile, and then it just loomed before me like Mt. Everest. OK, not that bad, but my legs are stiff; I say it was the hills. Glad it's behind me; not ready for another one.

The humidity is what gets to me too. The air is heavy and hard to breathe. Yup I understand soaked, last few days, walk out if the ac and the glasses are fogged. Glad you finished and are ok through that. Love your lime green shirt!! One of my favorite colors!!

Congratulations!!! TShirts AND HArdees?? I'm starting to consider this more and more. Of course, I'd have to walk most of mine. I'd probably be IN that rain. The things I'd do for free stuff! YOU... Sir... are Fantastic. I'm so impressed!

Haha, I've got to see how my new strategy works out before I commit to something like that. Also, it would be a lot easier on the joints if I were to lose another 20 pounds or so. But, hey, what's pain, anyway? Just another sensation that lets you know you're still alive.
