SoCalPam's Journal, 27 May 2018

It surprises me that there is so much junk food listed on the food searches here. I just typed in "banana" and got a string of banana splits, banana puddings, etc. when all I wanted was to differentiate between my existing "medium" banana choice and the new "small" one hubby brought home.

Not a big deal; I figured it out. But it really did surprise me to see all the different high calorie treats on offer. I guess it's good... if I ate a hot fudge sundae I'd plug it in so that I'd know I'd have no more calories left that day!

Or... maybe I've just created a challenge for myself to find a way to replicate a delicious sundae without ingesting all that sugar. Sugar free ice cream? Can anyone recommend one? Most foods I've tasted that have artificial sweeteners taste too sweet for me.

Oh, this is hysterical, at least to me! When you said that junk food is "on offer" in the Foods list, my first thought was, "It's information, not a suggestion!" However, when I just looked up "banana" on the Foods list, all I got was "banana," "bananas," and more "bananas"! So, now I wanna know: Why does SoCalPam get banana splits and I just get fruit?! Is the universe against me ... or Pam?!

Food for thought ladies lol

Miraculum, when you get to the bottom of the listing for bananas, do you look to see if there is an option to see more? I found the first page was just bananas in some form or size, but if I went to the succeeding pages, I found sundaes, pudding, etc.

SoCalPam, there is a no-sugar-added frozen yogurt by Kemp that I think is good. It's not as sweet as most of the artificially sweetened ice creams.

Well, yes, Pandasmom, I'm sure if I scrolled down, I'd find all the goodies. I'm just saying that plain old bananas were on the first page. LOL!

Kenna Morton: "Portion control"? Ice cream? Oh, you're a riot!

This whole ice cream thing reminds me of the very first person I ever helped with their wt. issue. This was 30 years ago at least. A friend of my daughters. 19 year old male, not real tall and 50+ lb. overt. Suffered from depression over it in a bad way. We sat down and worked out a WOE that INCLUDED 1 scoop of Baskin Robins every single day without fail. He lived 2 miles from the closest one and he had to walk. He agreed. So it went and he did what he was told. After a couple of months he called one day and asked if we couldn’t put those ice cream calories back in his food bank to spend on something else. He was so sick of ICE CREAM. in retrospect he says it was so liberating. He had no guilt, no remorse, no shame at being WEAK. He was also seeing a good start at weight loss because he was walking 4 miles every single day in the heat and the cold. Ultimately he lost his weight and never did regain it. For him it put his beloved ice cream in the category of just another food and he made up his mind that he was NEVER going to let food control his existence or his mental well being again. He is now about 50 and still a very big part of my world. Turned out to be a fine man.

Kenna, God bless you for helping that young man.

What a terrific idea you had! And bless that young man for following through. Walking 4 miles a day must have been a bit of a struggle at first, but that "carrot" proved worthwhile! Good thing he wasn't walking 2 miles each way to the local pub. That weight would never have come off!

Halo top ice cream n banana with nuts I would do. Definitely no chocolate syrup way too many calories 😳

If i had walked two miles for some ice cream i would have been getting more than one scoop lol But if i had a brand new half gallon of it in the freezer it would have stayed there a long time unopened.

To be honest the database needs way more products. A lot of time I have to go to MFP to get the nutrition facts to put into this site. I like to log all days including when I slip up and go really high calorie so having it all in the database is convenient. Also, not everyone is trying to lose, some use the site to gain and maintain.

@rosio19 I was buying some chocolate syrup for my kids and found a sugar free one! 5 calories per 1 Tbsp vs 35 for the regular. I’ve only had a couple drops to taste but I couldn’t tell the difference and I’m addicted to chocolate.

For me, having the nutrition information for the really bad things (like banana splits) helps me look at and realize WHY I don't really want to do that... or, like this weekend, when I found myself indulging in birthday cake, I wanted to know what kind of damage repair was necessary to fix that little speed bump.
