Renewal in a Life of Chronic Pain: Truisms to Live By

Ask anyone who has lived a daily life of chronic pain, and they will tell you:

Cats aren’t the only creatures with nine lives.
Human life tries to renew itself if we give it half a chance.
Pain doesn’t kill you, even though you think it will or wish it would.
If you’re bleeding, make it stop.
If you’re laughing, it’s a good day.
If you’re crying, it will eventually stop.
Age doesn’t mean as much as it used to.
If you’re as old as you feel, on any given day you can feel like a five year-old or a 105 year-old.
Life rarely is fair, so forget that angst.
Fair or not, you are still in charge of your own life.
If you don’t give others authority over your life, you will be stronger, more secure, and more productive.
Always look for your own destiny, even if you have to drag your body along for the ride.
Bent, wounded, and torn, you are still in there somewhere.
Happiness is a moment by moment experience.
Each bend in the road provides a new view.
Follow your doctor’s advice or get a new doctor.
All physicians are not created or educated equally.
It’s good to like your doctor, but not necessary if you are getting good care.
Speak up; only martyrs have taped mouths or bags over their heads.
Learn from the renewal of nature; trees leafing out, perennials popping into bloom, birds singing with joy.
Take a good look at yourself every once in a while.
Your appearance matters more to you than to others, but ugly affects everyone.
Stay clean.
Keep your habitat as clean as you can.
Improve your mind in any way you can, just enjoy it.
Learn to take help when needed.
Give to others every chance you get.
Talk to strangers.
Stay in touch or reconnect with old friends.
Families can be weird, so don’t expect too much.
Love fiercely.
Respect all living things; have plants in your home and hug a pet — your own or someone else’s.
Remember it’s not all about you.
Never, never, never give up.
