chowderhead's Journal, 15 May 2016

Last Monday I clocked in at almost 300lbs - 299.8. As I mentioned in my entry that day, this is almost the highest my weight has ever been. Truth be told, there have been a few times when it exceeded 300 by a pound or two. But hell if I was going to post THAT on this website! Still, looking back over the times I did weigh in here, I've been pretty solidly in the 290s for over a year now. That's simply too high.

So I mark today as my "official" day back. This morning I weighed in at 297.6. Down a little over 2 pounds since last Monday. Not a lot, but well within what I've heard referred to as a "healthy" rate of weight loss. And most of it from a shift in diet. In the past, I've focused on exercise and calorie burning as my go-to weight loss tool. Focused on it to a fault. My long, intense workouts and sometimes manic efforts to "out train" an excessive diet have in large part, I now firmly believe, been responsible for the long list of injuries I've been afflicted with over the last couple of years - sprained left knee, bad back, sprained right knee. With this winter's hernia, surgery and resultant recovery, I think it's finally sunk in - Time to focus on diet and moderate that exercise routine.

I'm a big guy. 6'4". So my two pound weight loss could easily be within the range of the usual daily weight fluctuation. But I worked at it. So I'll take it.

I kicked off my official first day back with a long walk. I swung by a local playing field along the way and did some very mild calisthenics. Mostly light movements to try and free up my hips, lower back and knees (I've been very sedate with work stuff lately. Those joints are the first to freeze up). I stopped off at the grocery store too. Bought some fuel, then walked to my studio. All told, I was on my feet and in motion for an hour and 27 minutes. I big jump from the gentle 20 minutes walks I've been doing of late.

As I was walking, it struck me that not all that long ago I wouldn't have thought twice about this level of activity. But today, it was a bit of a push. Tired now, but in a good way. I'm pleased my legs and core responded as well as they did. Taking it slow. On my way back.

Well I didn't start here with my actual high point weight, which was a few weeks prior to joining. And nobody will ever know what that was. :-P
