OK, I've resisted them, but I could use the scoop on protein powders/bars. Are they always kind of gritty and chalky? I was traveling and tried the vegan NoCow bars, and they were a bit much on that front. It's OK if they are, but I'd like to know. I tried a different brand yesterday (name escapes me, but it'll ring a bell when I see it on the Natural Grocers shelf) that was pretty good, but not super-high in protein. High enough for me, as I might want to increase, but I'm not super-geeked out on getting a huge amount. I'd need to look for a pea or soy protein, or something else vegan. It's mostly the what to expect on the texture front. If I have to, I can grit (so to speak) my teeth and deal with the chalkiness, if that's just par for the course

Have you tried the premiere protein drinks? Idk if they’re within your woe but I like the cafe latte ones, and then if I add like chicken for dinner and fage, some spinach, tuna and fage for lunch, a cheese stick and beef jerky for a snack, that puts me at like 125 g of protein so that’s what I like to eat when I’m trying to go for protein instead of powders.

I use Pure Protein bars. Love the Chocolate Deluxe. Very soft and almost candy bar like. I use it too keep me away from candy! They have lots of flavors. 21 grams of Protein. Then for a powder, I have been using Genepro powder. It has 33 grams of protein and you can mix it into anything!. No flavor, no chalky taste. Maybe just a little white coloring if you put it into something clear. It also is about half the serving size of a regular protein powder. I'm really loving it. No stomach problems with it either.

I only tried protein powder once and protein bars a couple of times and was not a fan of either. Tasted horrible and I agree about the texture but then I don't like a lot of processed foods. My doctor wasn't a fan at all and told me to eat whole foods. Like I didn't know that was best. LOL. I do like whole foods best and really need to get back to them and stay on them but it can be boring. I did read up on how to get more protein in and am doing better with that. I need to ditch the junk food though.

Alas, Premiere Protein and Pure Protein are both out, as I'm strictly vegan on the dietary front. I'm thinking of getting a bag of Anthony's unflavored pea protein and using it in stuff. I looked it up and it was the Raw Rev vegan protein bar that I tried yesterday that I liked. The name is a bit deceptive, as it's not a raw food, but it was really good. I'm not a raw food person, so it's not a problem for me

And Morticia - I'm generally more into whole foods than processed, which is why I've resisted trying them. However, I have a bit of a tough time getting adequate protein into my husband, who's in his 60s. He tends to snack all day on peanuts and cashews, which have some, but not adequate. I'm also beginning to think I should prioritize protein snacks after skiing and hiking, but that's generally when I want something sweet and easy to eat

my favorite "on the go" protein bar was Quest. i havent eaten these in years!! my favorite protein powder that doesnt taste like garbage is Muscle Pharm. i dont use it daily, mostly add it to pancakes or yogurt probably weekly use.

I find the plant based protein powder grainy but not chalky, I make mine with Greek 000 yogurt, kefir probiotic peach or strawberry, then I add fruit ie banana or frozen whole strawberries or and mixed fruit I have. It’s not bad. I made one this morning with breakfast and it kept me full so I didn’t eat much at lunch.

I don’t know if this is worth the effort or not, but when I’ve gotten grainy ones, I put them in the blender or food processor for a few seconds to take them one step further. I don’t like the grainy texture. I also like to add a little instant espresso mix to chocolate ones to deepen the flavor and take it away from sweet. That said, I mostly use them to make my frozen fruit ice cream at this point.

Oh ok, makes sense. I’d definitely try the pea protein. When I did use powder I could only do the plant based bc the others tore up my stomach soooo bad, it was the worst! I hope you find something that’s yummy.

I’ve tried the KOS Vanilla and it was pretty good. My favorite thing to make with it was a “cookie dough”. I’d put some KOS powder, PB Fit power, and SF chocolate chips. Add a touch of water until dough-like consistency. Yum! I also made protein shakes w the KOS.

the Snickers protein bar is supppper underrated!! it is legit my favorite. quest bars, barebells, and pure protein bars also taste good, but have some sketchy sweeteners that might leave you messed up. Aloha bars and go macro bars taste great and are very natural, but they are more of a meal supplement. the very best macros you'll probably find right now is Built Bar. they are ok but I'm not wild about them.

To me Built bars are great ( especially cherry barcia) but expensive and not super nutritional. I now eat pure protein bars which you can buy at Sam's or Costco. I like the peanut butter the best but usually I get the variety pack. As for protein powder I use Muscle Tech. I don't use powders that often that often because it upsets my stomach. I drink Premier protein premade shakes about twice a week. They don't upset my stomach as much.

No worries, Diana! I know I'm a dietary weirdo going 100% plants 😂 It's interesting to see all the different perspectives, and hopefully some non-vegans can make use of the non-vegan suggestions 😉 I looked up some vegan protein powder reviews online, and I think I may just get the Anthony's unflavored pea protein and start experimenting in the kitchen. I buy their gluten and nutritional yeast and have been pleased with those products. I did like the Raw Rev bar I tried yesterday, so I may start buying those. I'm not trying to hit the kind of protein levels a lot of folks are going for, but as we're getting older, I'm thinking it might not hurt to supplement a little

Things work best in all areas of life and nutrition when people share ideas and experiences...uh...I guess that's 'knowledge.' We can all learn and filter or apply what fits.

Indeed we can, Gopher 😊

I use the Orgain protein powder. It's vegan. When I first used it, I found it a little grainy, but I think I've fine-tuned the ingredients of my shake to where I like it. I do a mix of almond milk, Greek yogurt, mixed frozen fruit & the powder. I blend it with a few ice cubes in a good blender. I noticed after getting a new blender, I liked the consistency more....my old one wasn't cutting it. Not sure what you could substitute for the yogurt.

I actually make soy Greek yogurt, so I could use that, SherryeB. Thanks!
