Katsolo's Journal, 28 December 2023

Deep breaths. Last night, noticed that fridge doesn’t feel very cold. Whelp, that’s because it’s not. Repairman has been called, but he can’t get here until tomorrow morning. I don’t want a new fridge right now and even if i bought one today that was in stock, they won’t deliver until after the holiday. So, I’m kinda screwed. I have people coming over for NYE, we’ll make it work, but it’s going to be like camping, potentially. Don’t really have a new one in the budget either, but that’s just me whining. Going to hope it’s fixable. It’s holding at around 40 degrees, so the produce is okay for now and I might be out some milk. Or i can just make a gallon of yogurt for the new year. I bought this particular refrigerator under duress with a house full of company over the 4th of July in 2014, so it’s not even 10 years old. Just mad right now. Mini rant over, to be followed by anxiety bouncing in my head because that’s how it works.

I did a ton of yard stuff yesterday and did a longer walk with the pups after dark even though i said i wasn’t going to do that anymore. I wanted to see the Christmas lights before everyone took them down. It’s different seeing them on foot rather than driving by in the car. Today, we work on the house. BF and I are having another date night since he’ll probably be leaving again after the holiday. I miss him, but I’m not going to rob him of this time with his brother while he’s still mentally present. Went through the dementia thing with my grandmother and I get wanting to be there even though you can’t fix it. It’s a horrible, painful thing to bear witness to and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

Let’s see if we can make this a little more upbeat now. The lights were gorgeous on a street I hadn’t made it over to until last night. I also caught a daytime glimpse of this beautiful recycled creation brought to you by the same guy who made those disco balls out of plastic cups and LEDs. She’s lit up at night, but I wanted to catch the daylight version. Blob finally receding.

Had to buy a new fridge a couple of months ago. It was about 13 years old. Packed everything tightly into a big ice chest until the new one arrived. Put it on my debt card and I'm still paying it off. I went with a no buttons or whistles version too for the same reasons, less to go wrong. Hope yours can be repaired.

Kat, you do have dogs right?? A couple of big hairy ones. Our refrigerator got warm and it was just a couple of months after we had to replace the defrost timer. We freaked out and thought, we need a new refrigerator and so we went shopping. After seeing the prices of an equal size and type we came home and looked harder at the refrigerator and googled all the things that could cause warming. So, we had pulled everything out and taken it over and put it in Mom's refrigerator next door. We unplugged it, disconnected the ice maker and pulled it out into the middle of the kitchen and the two of us tilted it up on one side so we could see under it....MY GOD THE DOG HAIR!!! The coils on the bottom were completely clogged, so was the evaporator fan. We vacuumed it out, removed at least 3 medium dogs worth of hair. Due to the evaporator fan being clogged, the freezer was frozen over solid. We put a small electric heater inside on a shelf and partly closed the door for a few hours to completely defrost it. Dried it all out with towels and a fan. Hooked it back up and it purred like a kitten. So, I vacuum twice a day, sometimes three times. But that evaporator fan sucks a LOT of air through those coils and it actively pulls the hair in. The coils have to be cleaned out every two weeks now. We are looking at ways to put a filter in the front but reducing air flow is bad, we are still looking for something that can catch the hair!

Debra I was going to say the same but hesitated in commentingno dogs I currently have one cat. Previously two. Mine was running constant and hard and building up frost in a frost free freezer/ fridge combo. Not cooling as it should. I took off the back panel and did a thorough vacuum and vacuum as far as my attachments can reach under the front panel under the coils regularly. Use my swifter daily in the kitchen around my appliances. She purrs like a kitten.

Honeebuns, I had no idea that hair could build up like that, especially when it seems like I am constantly getting it all up on a more than regular basis. But my GS boy likes to lay right in front of it and Missy, the big white one...her fur floats!!! It clogs the AC filters, ceiling fans it even sticks to the paneling on the walls!

If you have to get new fridge do not buy Frigidaire. We’ve had nothing but problems and customer service is horrible!

Try cleaning the coils it happens

So after all that, and maybe cleaning the coils the other night and moving it around, it fixed itself last night. Repairman came out, looked at it, said he’d come back if it does it again. Said I may have blocked the vents because the freezer was still plenty cold. Everything is fine at the moment. I’m happy enough because $60 is a pretty good outcome. He also told me to not buy GE again and to let him know when I want to replace it and he’ll help me find whatever is good at that point.

Roomba runs twice a day, but there was still dirt and fur.

We have a wine fridge we use as a beverage fridge for energy drinks and Pepsi and protein shakes only and i think it’s the compressor that went out. It’s 9 years old and a higher end machine so i was pretty surprised but when we pulled it out just like you said Kat, there was a ton of sawyer fluff (golden retriever) back there. Same thing. Run roomba multiple times a day as well as vacuum once a day and still….good idea to pull the big frig out tho and check will do that today.

Katsolo and Deborah i have to send a big shout out to both of you!!! Because of the frig conversations i started thinking about ours and DID pull it out and OMG the dog hair and filth that was back there. Im a tiny bit of a clean freak so it shocked me. It’s been a long time since it was pulled out. I took the vent off the back, vacuumed and wiped out inside of there and am sending y’all a big thank you for making me think about it. Who knows…i got a call this morning from property manager that my big house rental fireplace repair is going to be about $4400 which is most definitely NOT in the repair budget for rental and got to thinking if we had to replace our own frig on top of the refrigerator i bought this month for same rental i would probably just want to literally scream. Repairs are never ever not even once not even a little not even a smidge fun.

Ugh. There is no repair that’s less than $1K these days. Nothing. Makes me crazy.

Me too. Honestly, I just need to get through this weekend with guests. After that, I can deal with whatever life dishes out. I just don’t have them time to screw around.
