Trying to stick to 1,700 calories a day.This is still too much as I'm not very mobile but it's a start.

It's a good start. Sometimes people need to ease into a diet for the first week or two before reducing their intake to their personal RDI. Weighing and logging everything makes you think about the type of food you eat as well as portion size.
