Fat Secret doesn't do macros correctly!!!

Look at this example:

This works out at 45% protein, 30% carbs, 25%fat.

The math is pretty simple take the number of grams protien, 180 multiply by 4 (four calories per gram protein) divide by calories 1606, times by 100

((180*4)/1606) * 100 = 45%

Come on Fat Secret get it right!

I think I have figured out the problem if you do the other macros they work out right: Carbs ((102*4)/1606)*100 = 25% Fat ((44*9)/1606)*100 = 25% But they have missed out Fibre! Fibre ((41*2)/1606)*100 = 5% This should either be shown as a separate slice on the pie, or added to the carbs pie. But definitely not added to protein!

oh no numbers on a saturday morning @Giles!! i will just believe what you say is true :)

Exact numbers are never important in a diet, but its just wrong! A software engineer like me picks up on this sort of thing.

yes i think finding a formula that works for you is more important than the numbers. still useful for knowing if you are not getting enough of something though. and with you on the protein thing they should be added to the carbs if anything

As long as you are fit and healthy and not too overweight does it really matter. ?
21 Mar 15 by member: bigfatbastard
Not a jot, but then why even bother recording anything you eat?
21 Mar 15 by member: GilesBathgate
Because by recording it you keep a better record. I tend to sit and do my meals snacks etc for the day ahead, look at the final result against RDI and then adjust if required.
21 Mar 15 by member: bigfatbastard
Yes I tend to use it that way for the most part. But I also find it useful and interesting to see what my macros come out like.

i too plan everything in the morning i find it keeps it on track better and i can plan family meals this way better. the one macro i keep my eye on is protein, i never used to give protein a thought regarding it as something only body builders need to worry about. i've since changed my attitude and have felt much better for it

'Scuse me for being nosy Drullae, looked at your food recorded for today. Same problem there, it says you have 47% protein, but you actually have 23%. I know as bfb says "so long as you are fit" etc. But If I had a spirit level and it didn't' work, I would still say its broke! regardless of whether I care that my picture frames aren't straight.

LOL Drullae Most experts (For what they are worth) say 15-20% of RDI should be protein but no more unless you are bodybuilding.

please ignore the wine i have a party to go to tonight!!! so is that fibre? this is why i go off the grams eaten mostly, i don't really do percentages (you may have noticed my brain doesn't do maths well!!) what method would you use Giles for working out protein requirement per day...keep it simple! according to my nutrition course (see i am taking note of it even if ti isn't low carb friendly ;)) i should eat 0.5 - 0.8grams of protein per pound of body weight. so i'm 133lb so thats approx 66g a day at the bottom end...yeah? which i'm covering with my protein intake now

@Drullae No the recommended minimum is 0.8g protein per kilo. which would be about 10%. This is the value that Lisa Sheldon quotes in those Nutrition course videos I sent you. Later on in one of her videos she says between 10% and 35%, (48g - 155g) and makes a point that most people are not eating lean protein which is why it should be kept to a minimum. To do a percentage calculation you just take the weight in grams, convert it to calories, and divide it by total daily calories. This will give you a decimal value between 0 and 1, so you can times that by 100 to get a percentage. I hope that makes sense, you just have to get to grips with percentages in general if not. I think what you are eating is just right for your diet preference of paleo/high fat. If you were on a more traditional diet you would want 48-100g of protein, Waaaay more carbs, and waaay less fat ;)

cheers Giles, i get the calculation when it's written in words, my brain is just weird

yes, yesterdays protein was 26% which is what FS said, yet todays is well out as you said. wonder if the alcohol is throwing off
21 Mar 15 by member: drullae
Ah ha, yes alcohol has a caloric value of 7 Kcal per gram. Don't know how FS accounts for that, should be included in carbs.

@Drullae BTW a couple of links for you and your ongoing nutrition research: https://vimeo.com/107524227 and http://tinyurl.com/koduha4

WOW!! Does this all mean I should not be feeling as healthy and well as I do. Does all my weight loss count for nothing. I wish I could remember all my Caculus Formulas from my school days. The whole thing sounds like "How many Apples in Pound of Grapes" to me. Eat Well! I'm having Trigonometry Toast for Breakfast and Vector Space Vegetables for lunch. Evening meal will be Algebra and Onions
21 Mar 15 by member: Jimporter
LOL. @Jimporter Nutrition can be as complex or as simple as you want it to be. There are many sites dedicated to macros such as http://iifym.com and all sorts of scientific arguments about whether is just a case of "calories in vs calories out" or wheater it also maters what you eat. Even though percentages are just basic maths, no where near as complex as trigonometry I still want to try some of those vector space vegetables! Sounds tasty ;)

Space veggies? Are they like Space cakes? Lol. Thanks for the links Giles when my hangover goes away I'll check them out
