Hello FS world!

Last night was one of those random nights again where my 'White Sh!t Allergy' (WSA) had reared its ugly head again. WSA is the terminology my brother lovingly coined for the random reactions I get to certain dairy food combinations... or, certain sugar or milk products combined with other random factors like fruit... it's really hard to explain.

For example:
* Kraft Cream Cheese Spread. Absolutely delicious - I can eat it by the jar, but I prefer to spread it on some bread with some smoked salmon. No issues with this product whatsoever.
* Random yogurts... be it Greek, plain, fruity, etc. Will happily scoff some down on occasion, again no issues.
* Mango. Yummmmm! Can eat one or two happily by itself.

But heaven forbid if I eat a dessert that contains all three components put together. Last night I had a few bites of this combination, and within a few minutes I became very ill - pale face, massive pain in belly and chest area, tingling in head, loss of concentration, and then excessive hot/cold flushes. At this point, all my brain wants to do is shut down and go into a VERY deep sleep.

I've had this reaction before - normally these symptoms will last 10 minutes to a few hours. The worse it is, the more my mind goes into total melt down mode and tries to make me sleep deeply for a few hours (after which I'm fine. People have great difficulties waking me from this sleep). If I don't do this emergency sleep, I will not know which end wants to go first on the can and there will be a helluva lot of pain to get through.

The main gist of WSA is, by themselves, I can generally eat these things without any adverse effects, so it's not a 'real allergy' - i.e. lactose allergy (although as a child I did have a period of time where I couldn't eat dairy, for the same symptoms). But, put some of these things together, and I go quite ill. It's like my thing with tomatoes - sauce, puree, sun dried, all generally fine and one of my main food groups! But raw tomato will set me off straight away, even if it is hidden I'll swallow it and then seconds later something bad will happen.

Going to chat to the allergy team at work, but so far my coworkers seem as dumbfounded as I. There's two other people that I know of who are similar to me.. anyone else out there like us? :)

Might be a PH thing - that looks like a list of fairly acidify food list for your gut PH - perhaps find some lists that outline foods that are acidifying and alkalizing, and then try to make sure you always combine them in an effort not to have your ph levels too far one way or the other in your gut. Maybe that will help - you can make your self very sick if you go too far either way. The body likes to be a balance of the 2. Other than that I have no idea why. Good luck I hope you find the reason.

I agree Chrysicle, I think pH definitely has something to do with it too - not the whole effect but I have suffered when eating/drinking highly acidic products/produce at the same time. The dinner before the dessert should have alkalized my stomach though but, who knows? :) I was lucky yesterday because I was able to have a chat with a few docs that are in the field (albeit children's doctors... but...) - they mentioned that they've seen and heard of others with similar issues; a common one (which I have too) is cooking with oil vs butter. For example, I cannot make garlic prawns with butter - have to cook them with oil or else same symptoms and rash come out. I can eat butter and slap it on my corn, but can't cook with it :( Fingers crossed these guys will work out a test for me - they're getting together in a few days to work something out for me :D
