Sandy701's Journal, 06 August 2013

Up early today to take DH to work. He has an eye appt. later so I need to shuttle him to/from that. While he's at the appt., I'm getting a haircut....better than just sitting in the waiting room and I'm not really in the mood to go shop for anything close by.

UGH Index has been a solid 10 for well over a week now. Bleh! But, by being up earlier today, the dogs got to go for a bit longer walk with me when I got home. In fact, my Collie went the entire distance.

My focus on very low carb (for me) continues. I have found, however, that if I don't keep up my level of fat, I get RAVENOUS and that pretty much spells disaster (aka peanut butter). I had dismissed someone's notion that I might gravitate toward PB because my body wants/needs fat, but now I'm wondering if that might be a possibility.

What this little experiment of mine is showing me is that if something isn't working, change it. I'm not talking about the folks who lament that they're not losing and it's been 3 days. You need to give your body time to adjust to ANY WOE....and you need to follow the rules of that WOE consistently. But......if you've done that (and that's a big "if"), and you're still not losing, then change something!

I think it's the Atkins book, but I could be wrong, that says to wait it out. I disagree. At some point, SOMETHING needs to change. It might be subtle, like changing brands of a food item to eliminate a particular ingredient. Or, it might be more involved like rechecking the portion/serving measures on all the foods you "know", eating at different times of the day, rebalancing your meals so you're eating the largest one at a different time, rebalancing your allotment of carbs (assuming you're doing low-carb) among your meals, kicking-up your exercise 1x/week or taking an extra day of rest from exercise, or focusing on total carbs instead of net (again, assuming you're doing low-carb).

For me, my change was dropping my total carb level significantly. Surprisingly, on most days, my hunger was gone and I ended up eating far fewer calories with no cravings. So, is it the carbs or the calories that directly affect my weight? I'd still bet on the carbs.

As an aside, I'd also say that if you've been successful on a WOE previously and you KNOW you should be losing and you're not, perhaps a check-up with the doctor is in order.

I agree with you Sandy. If something isn't working, change it. But it seems to be working wonders for you. Well done. How much do those bulk chia seeds cost you. I heard chia is getting expensive these days. I one have about 1/2 cup left of mine.

Heather, the bulk ones @ Publix ran about $9.99/lb., if I remember correctly. The ONE Publix store that had them in bulk stopped carrying them. The cost is higher now that I'm getting them in a jar from either Walgreens or via Vitacost.com......WGs is if I run out before I place a Vitacost order, otherwise VC seems to have the better price.

I think adding/upping your fat intake will help with the hunger though you ended your journal saying you weren't hungry? Perhaps I misread. Glad you got a long walk with the doggies before th UGH got to bad :)

Yep we all have to change things up a bit in order to make a diff..I am hoping all this extra work I am doing will help me get a good start of losing again...Its less humid here right now..but its to rain most of the week come Wed..Boo...Have a good week in case I can't get back on for a few..I never know when we will go over to the old home place...:O)

Interesting, Sandy. I'm a big Vitacost shopper. The Publix price doesn't seem all that bad though.

Issy, what I was trying to say is that dropping my carbs had diminished my hunger UNLESS.....I had also inadvertently dropped my fat a bit too much. When that happened, the hunger returned BIG time!!! So, I need to watch my fat intake, keeping it high, along with keeping the carbs low. It's a real balancing act, isn't it? Seems like there ought to be an easier way, but, for me, it doesn't seem like there is. :)

Paula, I'm coming out of (hopefully) a period of frustration and aggravation and whatever(!), probably somewhat similar to yours. What worked so well a year ago wasn't working. Realistically, I had been taking some liberties that I apparently can't take....and still be successful. It's not fair, that's for sure!!!! I was about 1 step away from booking a doctor's appointment when I thought to try a lower carb approach, at least to get me moving downward again. I "think" I know how to eat to maintain, but I couldn't seem to find my way back to getting into "loss" mode. This is my Labor Day Blitz approach.

Bren, I'd be very surprised if you don't drop a couple with all that hard labor your DH is making you do! LOL! Wish we could get rid of our rain for at least a few days....I'm feeling like I live in a rain forest! Take care and don't get hurt doing all that "exercise"!

Heather, I really liked getting the chia from Publix, esp. that price. But at least I can just combine them into my usual VC orders. If you're like me, between the two of us, we probably keep VC in business!!

LOL, true that!

Bring on the BLITZ!!!! I have been in such a ridiculous funk...but I am climbing my way out - thru honesty, both w/ myself and w/ my eating! WHOOO HOO!
