Sandy701's Journal, 03 May 2013

It's been a strange few days. The all-day rain we were supposed to get has been intermittent, at best. UNfortunately, that meant I COULD go out and do yardwork....:( So, I've been out doing that and there's still much more to go. But you should see the mound of bags I have waiting for pick-up at the curb! Quite impressive!

This morning, the dogs and I had an encounter with an off-leash black Lab....luckily, a young, BIG, bouncy, friendly one (thought of your two, Dar...). A lot of neighbors were out and about and were trying to find out where she was supposed to go. Eventually, I got her into my backyard (fenced) and called the vet's office from her rabies tag. I found out I was already the 4th call the office had received!! She lives not far from me, although I've not seen her before. When the vet office called the owner after the first call, he basically said he'd be home "shortly"...everyone should just leave her (the dog) alone....she'd find her way home! Can you believe that???

One good thing about all this is that my dogs had a "happy" encounter and that it's apparent that there are a number of folks in my neighborhood who are willing to help out a lost doggy. :)

A few more tidbits:

* It appears my DH can finish out his career right here....no moving in our immediate future! We'd been sweating out these last couple months, waiting to see if he'd be moved. The basic process is now over and he's not slated to move this summer! Yay!!!! Although they can still do whatever they want with him, whenever, it's MUCH less likely at this point.

* A neighbor I only knew on sight died unexpectedly at home last week. The dogs and I walked by his house several times a week. He was always smiling and waved at us all the time when I had the dogs out for a walk, even leaning out the window of his truck to do so...I'll miss that.

* My grandparents' house....the one in which I spent most of my waking hours until I was school-age...was destroyed by an accidental fire. My grandparents have long since passed on and the house has had a few owners since, but it was still THEIR house in my view. Even on vacation last summer, I made it a point to go by and see the place. It's just a house, but that house held SO many wonderful memories of my grandparents and me. It was hard watching the news video.

Bren, it really IS like a part of my past is missing. No one got hurt, so that was a good thing. The structure is still standing, so perhaps it could be renovated???? Hard to say with a house that's that old....it wasn't new when my grandparents bought it many, many, many years ago. You have a good weekend too. :)

Brave, good hearted soul that you are, bringing a strange doggie into your yard, so glad it was a good visit. Feel sorry for the pup having such numb headed so-&-so for an owner! But, if Blackie is an expert escape artist you may be having frequent repeat visits. I would be totally heart-sick if I found out one of mine was on the loose like that. So happy to hear you get to stay put, so keep doing your yard work, you will be living with it for a while yet! Plus, if it keeps raining, you may need to use all those bags as sand bags. So sad to hear about your grandparents old homestead...mine holds special memories too. Maybe they will rebuild, we can only hope. Anytime you lose a good neighbor is sad...they can be very hard to come by.

GG, if my dog got loose, I would hope someone would do the same, luring my dog into a safe backyard until I could come to collect him/her. When I called DH to let him know about my morning saga, one of his first questions was, "So do we now own another Lab?" LOL!!! Despite an owner that felt comfortable leaving his dog running loose, you could tell that she was otherwise pretty well cared-for. If I had let my Collie into the backyard with her, I suspect they would have played hard until they were exhausted! Then, watch out pool....here they come!

You are indeed a kind soul to rescue the lab and I hope his parents at least said thank you. Glad that you aren't moving aftr all the yard work! and sorry to hear about your grandparents home, thankfully you have such wonderful memories.

Issy, I never met the owner because all the owner interactions were with the vet's office and I don't know if they even kept any record of our names. They knew what streets the calls came from however. Hopefully, the owner was informed of that and will realize that his dog could have been in greater danger, as at least one of the calls came from a street rather close to a heavier-traffic road.
