Rain, rain, go away! Solid, heavy rain all morning long makes my challenge walking not likely. We'll see how the rest of the day shakes out, but I may have to go with this as a day off and walk on Sunday....or go on Stairmaster for a bit later.

But, for now, I'm off to the kitchen to get that chili done up. Lots of slicing and dicing waiting for me, but the meat's already done and ready to go in the pot.

My foods are a bit off and I think I'll need to make up some additional meat. DH kept a leftover (low carb) blueberry pancake from the weekend but then forgot about it. Now, he doesn't want it and you know I'm not about to let something like that go to waste! So, this AM, I ate the leftover and then decided to do up a batch of plain pancakes - no blueberries left - instead of having eggs. The pancakes skew my total carbs, so I need to cut back in other areas, if possible. I'm usually prepared for that on Saturdays, but today I had planned on having the deep dish pizza quiche I made up yesterday....probably won't be able to fit it in now. Well, I could fit it in, but I probably shouldn't if I am working on weight LOSS, and not maintenance.

So, I guess you could say today is just a mixed-up kind of day.

RANDOM THOUGHTS: My chili is simmering and will be for a couple hours now, so I can get back to this.

I was shopping the other day and happened to notice the magazines in the checkout area. Saw one that had a lead article touting that one could lose 47 pounds by.....THANKSGIVING!!! Can you believe it? Actually, it's pretty sad that there will be quite a number of people out there buying the magazine that "promises" them a way to lose close to 9.5 pounds PER WEEK from now to T'giving.

Another item caught my eye in the local newspaper's grocery flyers. One store recently changed house brands, so they have new products and signage up in the store. They're advertising "simply healthy shelf tags." Depending on the color, these tags are supposed to let you immediately locate proper products if you're looking for "gluten free," "sugar aware," "all natural," etc. Well, one of the tags is "carb smart." So far, so good....UNTIL....you read what constitutes a "carb smart" product.

This is their definition of carb smart: "...identified by manufacturer as natural; minimally processed, no artificial colors or ingredients." What????!!! That's it??!! While these can be good qualities in foods, they don't address carbs at all! I thought perhaps they had a typo here and "carb smart" got mixed up with "all natural," but no..."all natural" is defined as "uses FDA definition of "healthy;" low fat (<3 g. total fat), low saturated fat & more."

Except for maybe the gluten free tags, the rest of these are worthless. Certainly the carb smart tags could lead one to several products that are NOT carb smart on a low carb WOE.

I could have used some of that rain - I may have to be dragging hoses tonight for our newly planted trees. As for those food package - I hate those misleading labels. Our stores have various systems of checks and stars to show which food is best for you. Maybe the same person who composes those labels also writes the headlines for those magazines.

We didn't get the rain we were supposed to yet..but the wind sure has been blowing..I have to read labels all the time..and I agree they are being very confusing about what the store considers low carb..or who ever is fixing the labels..its hard enough to do things right..with out all the mix ups...I bet your chili is good...:O)

Buffy....hope you saw the rain coming and didn't have to go dragging all those hoses around. Not sure about your area, but we got a BIG amount of rain that came down for most of the day. Pool's filled, not that it makes much difference with these cooler temps.

Bren, the pumpkin chili turned out wonderfully! Plus it filled the whole house with wonderful aromas. When DH came home, he said the house smelled like a very nice person lived here! Little does he know.....LOL!!!
