Random thoughts and observations:

Someone had posted a question in the forums about when do you consume the most calories during the day. And peoples responses were pretty much all over the place, as you might expect. We all bring our unique biologies, diets, and preferences to the mix. But it made me curious. What I found out was that it depends. I don't have a fixed preference. On average, I probably eat a fairly even amount of calories through the day. But I noticed something else. Snacking or no snacking. On days when I had less than 500 calories for both breakfast and lunch, I was far more likely to have snacked. My body was apparently not satisfied at this level, and I found myself hungry between meals. It was something I would not have noticed if I hadn't gone looking. But it is something I can stay aware of to minimize the snacking. I think I do better in general when I can stick to my three meals.

Cravings. Cravings can come from so many things. Situations. Memories and associations. Images. Withdrawl from sugar or other foods. I have gotten over the withdrawl cravings for sweets. But every now and then, I get triggered by something and that craving surfaces. So far, I have not given in. It may sound extreme, but I have a little running dialogue with myself about how toxic sugar is. Do I really want to give in to this momentary urge, and undo so much I have worked so hard to do? Not only will I get a bump in weight, but also I will have to go through the withdrawl cravings again. And I just don't want to do that. It takes too much energy, focus and effort. So far, that has worked.

Years ago, when I was in my 20's and very overweight (although less than I weigh now!), I lost 60 to 70 pounds, and kept it off for about 9 years. I ate less, and exercised more. I allowed myself the occasional treat. One rule I had that worked at the time was I could have one bite of just about anything. My thinking was this, the first bite of anything is the best. The rest is just calories. In the case of a dessert eating out, hundreds upon hundreds of calories. One bite was not going to make much of an impact, and I would have the maximum enjoyment of that bite. I don't want to even go there these days. I am afraid of what desires that one bite will cause to spill over into the following hours and days.

Someday, I am certain, I am going to go for that bite. And when I do, I will enjoy every moment of it. But until then, this seems to be the easiest way for me to keep my body in a happier balance. And that is what I crave most these days. Balance. An inner harmony. Sounds corny or new age-y, but it is a better place for me to inhabit. And what I eat, or don't eat, seems to have a big impact upon that.

Good perspective! I find myself shaky and hungry if I don't space out my food throughout the day, so I aim to consistently eat but not overeat. As for a bite of this or that, I go for it! I love to snag a few fries or a bite of dessert from someone else. It makes my tastebuds happy and makes me feel like I'm not on a restrictive diet.

I really haven't seen too big of a difference with where I put my calories but if I kind of like three meals and sleep better if dinner is a little lighter. When eating out I never order dessert but I always make the server tell me about all the desserts and I savour every word.

Good one aurora! I love the idea of hearing about the desserts! I will have to try that...we are going out tomorrow for our anniversary. :)
