Bird Fancier's Journal, 04 August 2013

I just did some figuring on my "keeping it off".

1. Mistake #1 - Returned to eating nasty carbs/lots of sugar instead of doing owl phase.
2. 250-208= 42 lbs gained in 1 year = 3.5 pounds per month. (2012-2013)
3. 208-183= 25 lbs gained in previous year = 2 pounds per month (2011-2012)

I do not understand why I couldn't muster the courage/motivation/will power to catch this before I undid all my previous hard work to lose the 65 pounds. I need to figure this out because I do not want to repeat that AGAIN!

I do not ever drink, smoke, or do drugs. I am often under peer pressure to join in with these things. Why can't I resist peer/family pressure in eating carbs/sugar/cookies/cobbler/cake/pastries/brownies/tortilla/bread/pasta/rice/potato etc? I really need to figure this out! I want to stay as strict with my choice as I am with drugs and alcohol.

Well Fancy, food is an addiction also. Just like alcohol and cigarettes, only food addiction is measured differently by folks who don't have that addiction. Alcohol addiction is treated like a sickness whereas food addiction is treated like a personal weakness. It sneaks up on you and is always waiting for an opportunity to make you gain weight. I was told one time that fat cells always stay in your body. they get smaller but never go completely away.

I think you've put your finger on a major issue that has to be resolved for anyone to be successful in keeping weight off. I've come to believe that the psychological part of this journey is at least as important as the basic food part. When we put our minds to it, we can usually handle the food part, but it's those psychological triggers that will do us in every time! Might be worth giving some thought to what happens when you're under that peer pressure....how do you feel?...what would happen if you opted for something else?....how would you feel not partaking?...what do you fear would happen?....what do those foods mean to you?....etc., etc. Just keep on working.....you'll figure it out!

I know what you mean I try to eliminate the problem by reducing the chance of being a situation of being put under peer pressure, not always the answer thou. Most people are understanding if the really care about you and know what it means to stay on track. I also don't drink or smoke and Carbs are the devils food for me, I found a diet that I can stick to and not feel hungry on so I'm very excited for the future and planning what summer dresses I want to wear this year. All the best :)

Thanks diehard3, Sandy701 & Missnaughty. You are all right! It sure seems like an addiction. I read somewhere that cocaine and sugar are only slightly different in their molecular structure. So if I am addicted to sugar I guess I really need to treat it as a drug. Now... I just need to figure out how make myself STAY off it. To anwwer Sandy701 re my feelings: In my family it's all about food and appreciating the effort & talent to make a good dish. People get HIGHLY offended if you don't eat their food (plus second helpings) and then rant and rave about how delicious it is. If I say yes they are happy. If I say no then it all starts...the attacks on my WOE. "ATKINS IS DANGEROUS' YOUR GETTING TO THIN' DON'T YOU LIKE THIS? I MADE IT SPECIALLY FOR YOU! CAN'T YOU HAVE JUST A PIECE? YOU ARE JUST GOING TO GAIN IT ALL BACK. ON & ON & ON! IF I SAY YES I AM FILLED WITH ANGER. If I say no...I am filled with guilt for hurting their feelings. Another thing is when I cook, they always have to add stuff to it...like I am not making a good meal. Seasonings, potatoes, rice, etc.. leaving me feeling insulted to make a meal and have everyone change it from healthy to unhealthy. So, my solution to that is screw it...cook your own food! Wow...there is my rant for the day!

Yes unless your in a situation it's hard to advise. I have a very supportive family and yes my Mother loves to feed people but she understands my struggle and never makes me feel bad about saying no. If you were concentrating just on yourself how long do you think it might take to get to your goal weight? Is it worth removing yourself from situation that can cause you to eat things you don't really want. Never had a sugar addiction but certainly had a food addiction, and the biggest thing for me was never to feel hungry and on the Dukan diet honestly I have to make myself eat regular, I have lost 3kilos in ten days, and yeah I know what people say but I feel everyone is different and what might work for me won't work for someone else. My heaviest I weighed 163 kilos and been down to 81 and settled at 91 for years but now gradually after a holiday ttwo years ago weight had crept up to 110 until I started the Dukan 10 days ago...so watch this space. Wow and that's my rant for the day. All the best would like to stay in touch if you like
