I am a single Mom of two FABULOUS kids. Boy, 14 and Girl, 10. I am in my mid-early 30's and have been divorced 10 years. I have been roughly the same size since having my kids... give or take 10 pounds.. I am 5'9" tall and fairly broad shoulders so I carry my weight really well. (Thank God).. But that just isn't good enough.. I really want to feel GREAT about myself and my daughter is just getting to the "I'm fat" age which she is a bean-pole literlly she wears a girls size 6-7 AND she is 10 years old (almost 11). I want to set good examples for her.
When I was 25 I had to have back surgery due to degenerative disease(natural degeneration of tissue, ect) and have been having quite a bit of pain for about the last year. Ortho doc says to lose 30 pounds and strengthen my core or I will not have a choice but surgery to control the pain....So here I am trying to teach myself to eat better and get my weight down... One would think that the possibilty of surgery, not to mention the everyday pain, would be enough motivation but somehow it hasn't been... But this is 2010 and this is going to be MY year... You'll see......

The Dangers of Low Carb- Opinions?
I posted a similar question not too long ago and it seems to me that NOBODY has "the" answer. It seems to me that most people agree that moderation is key but not "the" answer. I COMPLETELY agree with Mahara! Besides if any ONE person or diet was right then there would not be entire websites and sections in bookstores devoted to all the different "opinions and sciences"..... Kind of like religion, your diet has to fit you and your beliefs for your body!!!!

Carbs or Calories?? Seems to be either or..... HELP!!!
I completely respect the opinion but Atkins is NOT for me..k8yk and ConfusedAngel - I totally agree with you and that is what I have done. I must be doing something right to have lost 6 pounds in a little over 2 weeks.. I will weigh in again on Monday.. Somedays I just feel like I am concentrating too hard on one aspect. I suppose I just needed reassurance! The one thing being on this site has taught me is that by recording EVERYTHING I put in mouth has made me much more conscious and accountable for what I eat. I have never been a big sweets eater all and I have cut out most of the pasta, ect... So it does appear I am on the right track.. Thanks for the input!!!!

Carbs or Calories?? Seems to be either or..... HELP!!!
Ok so I am one of those people that gain weight unproportionatly! Most if not all of my weight gain is in the mid-section. Luckily I am 5'9" and carry my weight well....I am trying to figure out if limited carbs are the solution or limited calories? Or both? But to limit both seems really unrealistic long-term.. I am not what I would consider a sedentary person but I don't think I would fall into the active definition either...I have tried the South Beach Diet and it worked well for me a few years ago but I also had a very thin roommate at the time that kept me motivated...First I think I need to figure out the ultimate question.. Carbs or Calories?????? Any words of wisdom?

diet
I totally agree! I have my RDI set at 1500 and I end up staying closer to 1200 and that is LOW and I still feel like I eat all day!! Most days I feel like I am scraping by which I think is why I have had a hard time incorporating exercise on a more regular basis, not enough calories.. You need to figure out what your BMR is and caloric needs are.. I yahoo searched BMR calculator and found out a lot of info..Be careful that you aren't allowing yourself to fall into "starvation mode".....
