Eat More Chocolate, Lower BMI?

Here's a quote from the New York Times:
Quote:
"A new study shows that people who eat chocolate frequently have lower body mass indexes than those who eat it less often. The researchers could not explain precisely why something usually loaded with sugar, fat and calories would have a beneficial effect on weight. But they suspect that antioxidants and other compounds in chocolate may deliver a metabolic boost that can offset its caloric downside."

HCB mentioned serotonin in her journal the other day. Could there be a link?

Wish I had stopped reading after the second paragraph. I was all set to log my daily exercise as running down to the store and running back home with a five-pound box of chocolate... for extra exercise maybe even a ten-pound box!

The article goes on to say:
Quote:
"It’s not the case that eating the largest amount of chocolate is beneficial; it’s that eating it more often was favorable,” Dr. Golomb said. “If you eat 10 pounds of chocolate a day, that’s not going to be a favorable thing."

Sigh. I guess I'll have to stick with my dark chocolate-covered cocoa nibs from Trader Joe's at 1 calorie per nib.

Know Fat Chicks

I debated whether or not I should share this photo I took two weeks ago. (The group had towels and shirts that identified themselves as "Know Fat Chicks.")

DIVERSITY: Before someone rolls up a newspaper and hits me on my nose, I want to say, first off, I believe in ethnic, social, physical, and workplace diversity. In fact, my family is so diverse, our group photos resemble posters for the United Nations, fight anorexia, and Weight Watchers all rolled up into one.

I'm also a believer in the benefit of mutual interest and support groups like FS. My buddies' journals often make me laugh, encourage me, and make me pause in self-reflection.

THOUGHTS: I see a group of people having fun, and that's a good thing. To quote from their post, "We hung out on the beach, did the menopause mambo (in support of menopausal women everywhere), a flesh mob (like a flash mob only fatter)." I was all right with everything until I spotted this at the top of their blog:

Does health really come in all sizes? Maybe I'm being too literal. However, for my anorexic niece, I think not. For my overweight relative with diabetes, no.

KINKY THOUGHTS: If someone snaps a photo of me during a flesh mob dance, I guess I'd rather be naked and admired. Oh, perhaps not admired by my FS buddies, but at least by my hubby. Okay. Okay. So at our age, maybe not admired, but at least we'd have a good chuckle.
