18 April 2014

Fridays are my day to start work a bit later. It makes for a nice morning. I've already changed my sheets and put away my winter down comforter. I'm waiting for my blanket to finish in the dryer and then the bed will be clean, cozy, and colorful with the lovely Martha Stewart quilt I bought on clearance last year.

Yesterday I went straight from work to my daughter's house. The grandsons took turns napping, so I had a nice bit of special time with each of them and was able to talk with my daughter calmly for a change.

We went to Old Navy so my daughter could investigate what type of fit is best for her now. After her 2nd child, she feels like her body has totally changed. I sympathize. While there, once she was done trying on a bunch of clothes, I tried on 4-5 different types of capris and ended up buying some nice ones on sale. I also bought a black jersey dress a la "Mad Men," lol. It fits like a glove.

When I got home, I modeled my new purchases for my husband and his eyes bugged out of his head and lovely things sprung from his lips ("Honey, your body is looking SO good!") Then, I tried on a bunch of my smaller clothes still in my closet. EVERYTHING fit! It felt SOOOOOO good.

I didn't cheat at all yesterday, despite being out and about from 8:30 am to 9:30 pm. I am really getting the hang of this.

Anyway, my original challenge (12 lbs. by Easter) that our FS friend, BuffyBear encouraged us to do really should be ending THIS Sunday (I started the challenge in an official format, but it made me allow a few days to encourage participants, so it goes BEYOND Easter).

I have weighed myself a couple times this week and my 1 lb. loss has held, so I don't feel I need to wait to weigh myself on Saturday or Sunday. Plus, I've been gradually moving up my weigh in day. My very first weigh in was a Friday, so I'm glad to be back there.

That means I made my goal EXACTLY. 12 lbs. by Easter. Hoorah!!! There are some participants that weren't able to officially join, but BuffyBear was doing a post every Sunday to document their stats. She had to take a bit of a breather from things, so there hasn't been an update in a couple weeks.

For everyone that joined in spirit or in print, I hope you are feeling good about things. If you are not, know that we all are behind you as you set new goals.

I for one am very proud of myself and look forward to finding another challenge if the fit is right. If not, I feel I can just chug along doing what I'm doing.

I really look forward to my physical in mid-June. While my doctor could probably still say I need to lose another 20 lbs., we have a good relationship (I used to be his nurse) and I can stand up for myself and say, "Hey, look how honest, gradual, and consistent this journey has been! Don't shortchange me!" Plus, I know my lab findings and vital signs will be improved, so that is REALLY what doctors should be looking at. That and my lovely mental attitude and sunny disposition :-)

Have a lovely Easter everyone!

I've been a bit under-the-weather for the last 3-4 days. I used to suffer terribly from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I've been very fortunate these past 2-3 years and I seemed to be over it.

One never knows whether they've ingested a food item that was past its optimal date, so that could be what happened this time.

In any event, I really had to overcome pain and fatigue on Saturday to get in my walk. I had hoped that it would help me feel better (TMI alert, exercise tends to help you pass gas, lol). Unfortunately, I felt just as bad when I returned.

I attended a potluck and hardly ate. I was amazed that the "chili chippers" appetizer held no allure for me. The proposed dessert got hijacked by a curious cat, so I didn't have to worry about that.

I left early because of my tummy ailment. It didn't get any better overnight. I stayed in bed most of Sunday, only getting up to do a quick clean-up of my kitchen/living room. My youngest son turned 20 yesterday and everyone was coming over for pizza and ice cream cake. I came pretty close to cancelling everything earlier in the day, but tried to pull myself together for my son's sake. My daughter got to my house around 2:15 and, even though she knew how rotten I felt, I found myself with a baby in my arms in the middle of trying to make a salad. She didn't help me with the salad.

I survived the rest of the afternoon and kept hoping that things would break up early. My youngest son LOVES to play games when a group gets together. I bit my lip and survived a pleasant card game and snuck off to bed. Then I remembered how little I had eaten in the afternoon and went back down to get a healthy snack.

I awoke at 5:00 am with a pounding headache, fever, and more abdominal distress. I made it back to bed, trying to decide whether to call out for my morning shift. After about ten minutes I decided that was for the best.

I'm feeling a little better now, but it's been rough. I feel grateful for my previous respite from this ailment. I hope it's another couple years before I have another bout this bad.

On the plus side, I jumped on the scale an hour ago and I'm down another pound, lol. I didn't record it because I prefer to stick to my once a week so I don't have to deal with little ups and downs.

I'm loving this beautiful weather our region has been blessed with lately. I know better than to think it's here to stay, though. I was still hurting when I got home from work, but I changed into my walking duds and did some much needed dusting, sweeping and mopping, then headed out. I had sunscreen on and a hat. Unfortunately, there was just enough wind that my hat kept getting blown off. That was a bit annoying. Also, my sunscreen seems to attract gnats and such.

I took it a little slower than my usual because of numbness in my left leg (related to my back issues). I'm used to my left foot burning about half way into my walk, but for the last three days I have had numbness in the front of my left thigh. This is not usual for me, so I'm just noting it in case any other weird symptoms develop.

I'm grateful that I can still walk, even when things are acting up. It used to be that I'd try to exercise and I'd experience tripping and excruciating pain in my buttocks and back of my leg, making me limp. I pray repeatedly that this "good" streak continues.

Have a good evening everyone!

08 April 2014

I'm back from my 3-day anniversary trip to the beach. The weather was as expected. It rained and was pretty grim on our first day. We ate lunch at McMenamin's Sandpit at the Gearhart Hotel. We had a great view of the golf course and laughed as we watched one lone golfer bear the wind and rain. They had some delicious choices and I was mighty proud of myself for declining the homemade tater tots or fries. I had a tasty salad. I got a box for half of my turkey sandwich. It was really good quality wheat bread, well worth the splurge.

We stayed in for the evening, watching movies and enjoying the wet view of the beach out our third-story window. We had our lunch leftovers and then each partook of one giant Shari's Berries each (our daughter's surprise gift to us for our anniversary).

We enjoyed Cannon Beach (which is a lot like Carmel, CA) Sunday morning, although it was still pretty drizzly. We were in search of a modest piece of art to purchase as a nice momento of our anniversary trip. We found something we liked in the very first gallery we stopped in, but told her we'd be back after perusing the other galleries. Sure enough, we didn't find anything else we liked as well, so back we went.

We stopped for Mexican and I declined the tortillas with my Carne Asada. No margarita either (I haven't had alcohol in three months). Next, we took a nice walk on the Promenade and then cut across one of the paths through the scrub grass down to the beach. What a difference a few feet make! It was quite brisk on the beach, but the sun was attempting to peek through, which gave us hope.

Once we made it back to our hotel, I let my husband head inside to investigate a restaurant for our one nice dinner. I got back on the Promenade, walking for a total of another 45 minutes. That felt really good and the weather was definitely improving.

Back to the room for a brief nap and lots of pampering (the room had a huge jacuzzi tub and I took advantage). We took some pictures in our room with my camera's self timer, then headed out for our nice dinner. We beat the crazy dinner rush by literally 5 minutes. I ordered Halibut and baked potato, cutting my potato in half. The salad was alright, though not as good as the one at McMenamin's! Again, only had water.

My one splurge was homemade Key Lime Pie, which I had 4 amazing bites of. I apologized to the waitress, telling her that it was AMAZING, but that was all I could allow myself.

We walked around the pretty area surrounding the restaurant, making notes for future trips with our grown kids and the grandsons. We went back to our hotel and just enjoyed each other's company, and the bottle of Ballatore I brought along. Yum! I haven't had any in years! I had just one glass and I appreciated every sip. Had just one more of the Shari's Berries and decided I was going to give away the rest (yup, I brought them to work today and they were gone JUST LIKE THAT!!)

Monday was beautiful. We had a delicious breakfast at a converted Fire House. Their sausage was homemade, as well as their biscuits. I had three bites of the biscuit and again, IT WAS FANTASTIC!! I told my husband I have a new theory. No more wasting my precious health and calories on mediocre stuff. If it is amazing, I'm going to have just a few bites and savor them!

We headed off to Astoria and had a wonderful couple hours in the Marine Museum. We learned so much about Oregon's salmon canneries and the role of the Coast Guard in the many rescues that take place on account of the dangers of the Columbia River Sand Bar. It is the most dangerous in the world, with the powerful river butting up against the fury of the Pacific Ocean. We learned about the specialized skills required to navigate huge ships through all the locks of the Columbia River, followed by a different skill set in navigating through the Sand Bar. Just getting those two different pilots onto the ships (and off again) was a dangerous job!

I got home in the mid-afternoon, got everything unpacked, and headed over to my daughter's house. We took the grandsons for a nice 45-minute walk. The weather was stunning (of course it was, it is always beautiful the day you are leaving!)

All in all, I think I managed my getaway really well. I had a few more Jelly Bellies and a bit more White Cheddar Popcorn than I normally would, but I still measured it out. Only one glass of alcohol for a three-day trip is a record!

Back to business today. I weighed myself just out of curiousity and I was up a pound, but I'm not too worried. I might only stay even for this week, but it was worth it. I did my strength training dvd tonight and am feeling good.
