My weight loss journey began before Atkins... Here is my story...

I was never an overweight person until 3-4 years ago. Throughout my teenage years and adult life I pretty much sat at between 55-60kgs (120-130lbs) until I started these crazy weight gains.

At first I thought I was gaining at a rapid rate because I had quit smoking, drinking and caffeine (quit the lot all at once in Sep 07) and I wasn't as active as I once was and without a doubt I did gain around 15kgs. Being just 5 feet tall and gaining 15+ kgs at a time was horrific. The weight just kept on coming, between February and September 2008 I had gained 44kgs (96.8lbs) ! My doctor was truly concerned and sent me to our local public hospital to undergo a number of tests. It was the most unpleasant experience ever, I was treated like an overweight fat-so and they just didn't believe my story. I learned a whole new respect for anyone and everyone battling the bulge! After 2+ months of every test they could give me one hospital specialist did understand my plight, my story and my horrendous gains! He told me I had a very rare insulin condition and that I was the only second person in NZ that he had heard of. Apparently my body didn't know the difference between a lettuce leaf and a chocolate bar! No kidding I thought! It all made sense at long last and all I wanted to do was get cracking to lose it and get my little me back again. What a journey it has been....

I was given a course of drugs that made matters worse, so I decided I wasn't going to have drugs and the hospital dieticians I spoke with and met with treated me like an overweight slob and because of this "rare" condition they just fobbed me off as person who just wasn't really trying. So I gave up on so called specialists, if they didn't believe in me who would! After months of tests and hospital visits and specialist appointments I had, had enough! One door closes, another door opens, and off I went...

My stats at time of starting a weight loss journey were:
Weight: 111.1kgs! (yes, I had doubled my natural body weight)
Goal weight: 55kgs
Start date: April 2009
Comments: at just 5 feet tall I was as round as I was tall and I couldn't walk further than 50 metres without gasping for breath. I knew this weight loss journey wasn't going to be an easy one! I couldn't even bend over to tie up shoe laces!

I sought the advice of a qualified Homoeopathic come Naturopath and she recommended to me a product called "Isagenix" and after weeks of research I decided yes, this was the product for me. I loved the program and my body seemed to respond beautifully to the products and the shakes were the yummiest I had ever tasted. I lost my first 25kgs on the Isagenix program, then I met too many stalls and my body (I believe became immune) and the losses just stopped! As soon as I was "off" the diet the weight started to pile on again even with healthy eating BUT my body adds weight with solid foods full-stop! I needed something else.

I needed a new regime to kick start the loss again and I researched the Detox aspect of weight loss and was impressed with the write ups on the "Lemon Detox Program" and had read hundreds and hundreds of testimonials and wonderful success stories. This was for me too and so I started on the Lemon Detox diet which I absolutely enjoyed. My body loved the potion and it cured my tummy ulcers that I'd had for years and the benefits of a good detox were aplenty. With my doctors permission I stayed on the lemon detox for 22 days! ZERO solid food for 22 days, it can be done, I did it! Sadly I didn't have the weight loss I was expecting the first week was magic but the next two weeks were basically no loss and I knew I couldn't stay on it longer than the 22 days. So all in all I had only lost just under 6kgs in 22 days, not a great achievement but the other benefits for my body were worth it and I recommend the Lemon detox for the body any-day, even if you don't lose weight. Spiritually great for the soul in my opinion.

So there I was with a total loss of 29.4kgs! with the use of Isagenix and the Lemon Detox program. I had already tried other diets previously like WW, eat right for your blood type, low calorie diets, cabbage soup diet, grapefruit diet, you name it I tried it and because of the condition I didn't know I had yet I only managed to lose just 2-3 kgs here and there but it always piled back on.

So what was I going to do after the Lemon detox program..... That's what brought me to Atkins...

I learned through ALL the different diets I'd tried but more so through "listening to my body" did I discover that carbs and sugar alone were the major factors in an overweight, unfit body that continued to stall, conk out and feel down right B L A H !

as of today 18th Feb 2010 I am on Day 4 and feel this way of life come lifestyle will work for me. Like any new regime, it takes time to adjust, takes patience, planning and persistence. I wonder if insulin resistance is caused by a body that has been overloaded in carbs and sugar for years, hmmmmmm, mind boggles... Certainly feels that way.

Atkins is a whole new approach but great if you love food! This suits me to a T...

My new and updated stats as of 18th-Feb-2010:
Heaviest weight: 111.1kgs
Goal weight: 55-60kgs
Today's weight: 89.6kgs
Goal weight date: Mid September 2010

I started Atkins thread on Atkins.com
