15 June 2017

Today is my first day on this site, but I have been working on my life goals (which include my weight goals) since February. I started out at 191 lbs and started following an AIP-Paleo diet. I was going weekly to physical therapy for a herniated disc in my neck (already repaired the damaged shoulder. Both caused by a major accident I was in.) and also seeing a personal trainer once a week for strength training lessons, because I didn't want to cause anymore injury to my spine or shoulder. I was also power-walking 3 miles 3x/week up a massive hill and doing yoga 1-2x/ week. Because I have pretty severe Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, all of that was barely putting a dent into my weight loss. It was coming off at about a pound a week at best. Then, at the end of February, I had neck traction done for the first time (on a machine). It was pretty aggressive, but it felt great. A couple hours later, I did my 3 mile walk, and the next morning I went to see my personal trainer. (He trained professional football players, so he was tough!) As soon as I left my trainer, I felt dizzy and confused. I thought it was just low blood sugar, so I ate something. About 7 hours later, I was finally seen in the ER and found out I had a stroke (probably dislodged a bit of plaque during the traction and then shoved it up into my brain during the intense workout). My life had forever changed in that one moment. I could no longer do my job, which involved commercial licensed driving. I could no longer walk more than 200' without getting completely exhausted. I could no longer turn my head from side to side or bend over without getting extremely dizzy. I could no longer lift one of my legs when lying on my back. And I could no longer concentrate on things or speak on a subject clearly. One moment changed me into what felt like an "old woman" from a "young women with a lot of years on me". Before that line in the sand was drawn, I was always of the mindset that age was just a number. I felt like a 25 year old, even at 50 and even with my injuries and health problems. Stroke took me to feeling 65-70 years old in the blink of an eye. Now, I walk from the bed to the kitchen and I need to catch my breath. So bizarre!
Anyway, I was already doing AIP-Paleo (which probably helped my stroke be as mild as it was) and so I just incorporated a few cardiovascular dietary adjustments into what I was already doing and added a bunch of natural supplements to help with circulation, cholesterol (found out I'm one of those "lucky ones" whose body makes too much natural cholesterol... fun fun!), and removing arterial plaque. I also started seeing a functional medicine doctor and started balancing my thyroid issues and have just begun healing my adrenals, which we found were very low functioning. Since then, I have noticed that despite my major decrease in energy and exercise, I have started to lose weight at a more normal rate for what I'm eating. I have also lost food cravings that have plagued me my whole post-adolescent life. I am currently 5'4" tall and weighing in at 157 lbs, which still puts my body fat at near 29%, despite my muscular build. My doctor believes that over the next 3 months that fat percentage will shift dramatically as I regain normal adrenal function. We shall see...
I currently don't eat enough (believe it or not!), which I'm told is a stroke related issue, so I need to work on that if I am to lose weight. Sounds completely backwards, but I have to trust in this doctor as long as I am seeing health and weight benefits like I have been seeing.
As of today, I am down 34 lbs and I have been sleeping better the last few nights and waking up feeling what I suppose would be called "refreshed" but I would probably just call it "not exhausted and all brain-foggy" which has been my wake up response for the last 25 years.
That's about all I can think of to record in this journal right now, so if you're reading this and I've left out some bit of info that you'd like to know about, you'll have to ask for it. My brain has reached that "dumped" stage (post-stroke condition) and I can't think anymore for a while. I'll write again soon tho. -Ciao!:)
