Personal Wellness

Definition of Personal Wellness

My definition of "personal wellness" is to be in an optimal state of health in the following categories:

1. Physical
2. Mental
3. Emotional
4. Spiritual
5. Financial
6. Social

If any of these categories are out of balance, optimal personal wellness cannot be achieved. In addition, the categories are inter-related. If even one of these are out of balance, none of the others are able to reach a state of optimal health.

Optimal Health

The level of optimal health I am able to reach, is both fixed and dynamic. Factors that are fixed are those I am unable to change, such as age or gender. I will never again achieve the level of health that I could have had at age 20. My body, mind and spirit are 56 years old.

Most of the time I don't think about my age or even care. Other times, I say aloud how old I am and can hardly believe it myself. Usually I am not sad or regretful, the feeling is more of surprise, even confusion (when did this happen?). Whether I acknowledge the fact or choose to ignore it, time is marching on.

I am in control (not)

The majority of actions to improve my health are in my control, or seemingly so. Every minute of every day, I am either moving towards or moving away from personal wellness, simply by the choices I make. Many of my choices are out of habit or influenced by the sub-conscious. Others are blatantly purposeful and deliberate, but are they truly? Why do I self-sabotage and continually make choices that are harmful? There must be a reason. For the life of me, I just don't know what it is. For the life of me, it is time to find out.

Starting weight 236 pounds.
