Yesterday I had an amazing moment. It was definitely one of those big
"D'UH!"
moments when the light bulb I wish had turned on 30 years ago finally did:
I am in control! I decide, no one else can control what I eat, I get to say "no" or "yes".
Really wish it had hit me sooner, but hey, you take what you can get. It means that I am accepting responsibility for my own choices and also removing myself from trying to control things by making choices for others (specifically my husband). An example: we had dinner last night, I kept my portions small. He had some bread and offered me some and I turned him down. And I realized (1)that was okay and (2)I really didn't want the bread!
A second example: stopped at my favorite coffee cafe, specifically to buy a pound of beans. Usually stopping there means I come home with sweets too; they have day old items that are 50¢ each (a real bargain!) and a case of scones and cookies, and a large case of their wonderful cupcakes and other items. And this time I just glanced at those things and
only bought the beans!
First time I've done that. I am no longer buying sweets for my husband and me. If I buy a sweet, it will be for me. If he wants anything, he can get it for himself. I am no longer buying into the mindset of "but we like the sweets, if I have some he'll have some, if he has some I have to have some."
I am hoping I can keep going with this. It feels great!

Note that the weight is NOT a loss, but an accurate weight, based on using my new scale this morning for the first time. The 210 was an estimate, and yes I was delighted to find out it was too high. Last night's dinner was great, I actually controlled portions and had lots of vegies. I feel like I've made a good start.

Well, after watching yet another episode of the Biggest Loser and having my "heart scare" on Monday, I went out and bought a scale today. I have just started a walking program with a couple of people who responded to my ad on Craig's List for a walking partner, and I hope to start adding some light exercise at least 3 days a week besides the walks.
I know that one of the things I really need to do is get back to eating more fruits and vegetables (and I know
everyone
has heard that line!) The silly thing is there are lots of fruits and vegetable I really enjoy. I just have to consciously make them part of my meals.
As I am sure others here have done, I've tried to lose weight and increase my physical strength and overall health many times. But I just turned 59 and although I am getting much better at accepting myself, I don't want to stay where I am, it's not healthy. And I am hoping if I can get the support from others to find my way, I can work on this and in turn help my husband who also is in need of help with his weight and physical condition.
