Sherillynn's Journal, 28 February 2017

Today seems a little bit overcast and damp but the snow is melting so it won't be long before I can get back on the trails and be walking with Hirschl.

My heart is heavy as I sit 400 miles away from my Mom. She is in an assisted living facility and has early to mid stage Alzheimers. I haven't seen her since Mother's Day last year. My brother rarely visits her~ maybe once a week for a few hours and it breaks my heart. I would like to move her closer to me but I struggle with the fact that she is in her home town and she does still get visitors from time to time.

When I call her, she is always very happy and excited. She has a lot of life just not a lot of memory. The home she lives I only has 6 residents and provides amazing care. They take the residents out and do lots of fun things so for that I am thankful.

There is just this guilt for me. Now, when my mom really needs me, I cannot be there to care for her.

Funny how our lives go through very distinct stages. I am on the far side of middle age. If I'd had children, I would probably be a grandmother by now. I am looking at how to best take care of an aging parent and I need an instruction manual. It isn't intuitive and it certainly isn't easy.

I Guess each stage has ups and downs. Challenges to be faced head on are sometimes a bit scary.

Does anyone else have this struggle in their lives right now? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Blessings to each of you.

While it is difficult for you not to be able to see and care for your mom, it sounds like she is in the best of care facilities and happy. Perhaps this facility could set up Skype calls between you and your mother from time to time? Seeing each other would probably be nice for both of you. As Alzheimer's progresses it is a full-time job to care for a patient. I'm sure it's all the more wrenching if the patient is a family member. I know there are people on here who are doing this and will likely comment about their experiences. You might also look at information you can find at AARP.org online about this issue.

First of all ... nice drop in weight! You are doing great!! Secondly, I have my mother at home with me. Last year I took her in for a checkup while she was having a long visit with me and the doctor suggested I have her tested by a psychologist. He said she has late-onset Alzheimer disease and should not be living on her own. My life is sometimes very stressful having her here. You have no idea how fortunate your mom let you and your brother place her in assisted living. She still has a bit of independence yet has lots of activities to keep her mind alert. I can imagine how guilty you must feel however (as Trackin said) she is in a great place. Your brother checks in on her weekly. Just keep calling her at a certain time every day if it will make you feel better. I found my mother likes a routine. Private message me anytime you need to chat. Hugs!
