Coral Elizabeth's Journal, 04 November 2011

I was recently diagnosed with diabetes. My new regime started in hospital and I have been following this ever since. Since starting the new regime I have quickly been losing weight.

I have radically changed my eating habits but I have found I am actually eating more than I did before! I still have porridge and a soya yogurt for breakfast but it is lunch and dinner that has changed.

At lunch I have a starter of oily fish and salad or soup, a main course that always includes rice, pasta or potatoes, lean meat and green vegetables, followed by bread and low fat cheese and a portion of fruit.

Dinner is similar to lunch with a starter and main course, I try to have fish as a main course a couple of times a week, followed by a plain yogurt and a piece of fruit.

I love fruit but the sugars in fruit push up the dextrose readings so I am allowed just two pieces a day. Starchy foods are crutial as they give long lasting energy so rice, pasta, bread, potatoes etc must be included. Green vegetables are also an important part of my life.

I am allowed one sugary dessert a week so I save my treat for something special like my grandson's birthday cake. Yogurts must be plain no fruit flavoured ones. Cheese must be low fat, as I am lactose intolerant I tend to go for soya cheese and yogurt or goat's cheese.

With what I am eating now I find I don't think about biscuits, cakes, sweets, chocolate or other naughty foods.
186.0 lb Lost so far: 0 lb.    Still to go: 36.0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.
